Skimmer placment ???

My overflow from the main tank goes directly in to my skimmer then through a filter sock and into a sump. My sump contains baffles of live rock, cheato and live sand,From there it goes through a Rainbow filter and back to the tank.I'm new at this so my question is does this work for you or should I change the placement???

i dont see a problem with this setup
however i maybe worried of a skimmer malfunstion that would close up the overflow or restrict it enough to cause it the tank to overflow

Sounds like you have a recirculating skimmer. That way will work well, but if you are getting any air bubbles down your drain it will effect the foam in your skimmer.

Thank you. That must be why it is so problematic .It will work fine then for no reason it will overflow and spill the skim mate into the sump.

Most of the time when skimmers overflow for no reason its because the water level in the sump is not constant. Some skimmers are more prone to overflow if the water level is not exactly constant. I have a BK, and its very touchy. Feeding a skimmer from the OF will work, but it will have air bubbles and this prevents the skimmer from being as efficient as it could. It would be better to feed the skimmer with a pump. I had a MRC recirculating skimmer and it really worked better when i used a pump in place of the OF.

You also might want to T off the drain so that all of the water isn't going through the skimmer. That might be too much flow through the skimmer.
