Skimmer problem

Okay, I think I see one of the threads every week but I'm going to ask you guys cause I can't ever recall hearing a good answer. What causes skimmers to freak out and pull water into the cup and over flow in seconds? I've changed absolutely nothing about my tank in the last few weeks. (except pulling one rock out of the tank and FW dipping it to get that damn itty bitty mantis out of it)

Let me know what you think. Even if you just post a link to a good thread that would be great. I tried to search and like always the search is down. Someday I'll probably just become a premium member so that it will work!!!!

I should add that its really not a major problem as the skimmer is in the sump and all the overflow just goes back into the sump. But it would have been nice if it didn't just push about a days worth of normal skimmate back into the system.

Mine did it over the weekend...the only event was my S.Tapetum anemone split...that was enough to create the nastiest foam ever.

Usually it is a protein or other substance in the water that causes it, normally biological in nature, such as a death of something that isn't consumed quickly. Water additives such as stress coat can do it too.

Nada, Except the FW dip of the one rock.....Oh yeah, and I added 1 - 3lb LR I bought from Chad over the weekend which I mounted my new frogspawn too.

Here's a though. I just used some puddy type exopy to hold a zoo frag down. It blew off the rock today. Could that cause it?

There we go!!! I probably woudn't have put it together unless you guys forced me to think harder. That is exactly the stuff I used. Thanks, we'll call this one case closed.

BTW i just pushed the riser pipe almost all the way down and its not half as bad now. I'll just keep a close eye on it and keep throwing out the crap before the cup over flows. Which should be ever few hours or more now. We'll get'er fixed.

Also changes in the sump water level could do that, If you added a rock without taking water out the level could have rised changing the skimmer set point.

Chad- I was epoxying the frag plug to the rock and couldn't take the rock out because it is in the bottom of the aqua-scape. Gel wouldn't have worked in this case. Otherwise I always prefer to try gel first.

Jdieck - note take. The water level was kept under control. Besides the skimmer freaked out 2 days after I added the rock and I have about 2.5 gallon per day evap. So it had to be the epoxy.

Thanks for the help guys.

Sure, Epoxi does that in my case although it does that it never lasts more than 15 minutes so I was looking for other potential causes as it seems in yours it has lasted a lot longer.

Oh, Sorry I wasn't clear on the time line. I epoxyed the frag at about 5pm yesterday. All seemed fine with the skimmer at the time. I didn't really check though, but I would have heard the trickle of water falling out of the cup. A few hours later I found the thing freaking out. I probably would have noticed sooner but we went out to dinner and I came home to the skimmer problem. I think I have it straightend out now. Thanks
