Skimmer Q&A Thread

no skimmer for dummies. But run the air wide open. and the valve wide open for the first 12 to 24 hours. after that you can slowly start raising hte water level in the skimmer.

Hey Mojo,

Any idea as for what I can do for my skimmer. Been having problems with start ups, and consistency. I explained back on page 98, you asked for pics, so I posted them on page 99. They came out huge though, so can you see the skimmer or do I need to figure out a way to resize them down? You asked me about the ATI skimmer being yellow, didn't know if you meant the skimmer or pump or whatever. Anyway, Thanks for the help.

Mojo,

There is no mesh in the pump, the pump that I bought has an impeller in it. But the pump is the tpart that I replaced, I just bought a stock psk 2500 so not sure if it has a pin wheel or not. But it doesn't look like the pin wheels or mesh that I see on a lot of other skimmers.

Thanks for the help!
what color is it ? is it yellow? can you take a pic ?

BubbleBlaster 2000 problems

Has anyone had startup problems with their bb2000? Mine will just sit there for 30 -40 sec or more before it starts after plugging in. It is clean (vinegar bath) and impeller is free. I can't figure out what's up with it. Has anyone had or solved this problem??

thanks

Well you have the water impeller. that will just not work. If you used the stock volute cover from the water pump it wont work well either. The volute covers are milled out to allow more water and air to enter. you will need to make sure you are using the old volute cover and get a mesh wheel or just a pinwheel for it.

Mojo,

Thanks in advance for your help. I've come across a deal where I could get a Bubble King Supermarin 250 for around $800 in a package deal with some other items. It would be used on a 215 gallon tank. Before coming across this deal I was considering getting either a ATI Powercone 250 or SRO XP3000 internal. I would still be paying more for the BK... What would you recommend? Thanks

Aquac Remora - Skimmate not real dark

Aquac Remora - Skimmate not real dark

Hey all, I recently picked up a Remora w/MJ1200 for $65 to work on a ten gallon tank. I know its bigger than a ten gallon would need, but need some advice.

Im not really getting a whole lot of dark skimmate out of this thing. Its been running for a week now and I am getting a light tea color water with floaty junk/particles in it. It appears that Im getting more water than skimmate though. I would assume when a skimmer is working its going to be dark like choc milk or molasses and sludgy or thicker than choc milk. My collection cup is sticking up about an inch now, because the foam wasnt making it to the top. I had it up two inches earlier this week and the foam was drier and less water collected in the cup.

I guess I need some advice to know if this is normal for this type of skimmer or what to do.

Thanks

Chad

Chad, I'd try to slowly raise the collection cup a bit.. it sounds like you're producing a "wet skimmate"... Make sure the skimmer is level.. for whatever reason the Remora doesn't work well when it isn't almost perfectly level in my experience.

Also, you might not really have a large enough bioload for it to make darker skimmate than that. Are you experiencing high nitrate levels or high algae?

The supermarin 250 is a great skimmer. If the deal is good I would go with it. I just never had a system large enough to run one on of my very own. The have a great transition. The are expensive new but if the other things in the deal are worth it will be the way to go.

Mojo~ the other two are great option too. you will be happy with all three

This is common. People get a skimmer and want a dark cup of tea in 2 day. No biggie. I was that way too. In reality the skimmer has to break in and you only have a 10g system. U will have to raise the cup slightly to get a more sry skimmate. This will yield a darker skimmate too. You will not get a lot out of a ten gallon tank. I would expect to empty your cup once every 2 weeks.

Mojo I traded for a mini bubble king 180 today.it actually used to belong to you.I put it in my sump and turned it on.the water level inside the body is at least 6 inched below the water mark.its got lots if frothy bubbles, but nothing I do raises the water/bubble level.turning the wedge pipe does nothing.is this normal?should there be a break-in period on a used skimmer?if so how long should it take?it is probably in six inches of water in the sump.

make sure the wedgepipe is all the way in. and what water depth is it at. you must of got it from unbreakable.

I did get it from unbreakable.I will check the wedge pipe.I be that's it.when I turn it it does not seem to go up and down, just around.should I feel the pipe going up and down with the wedge?I didn't measure the water depth.I am guessing about 6 inches.should I raise it?

I would run that skimmer in 8-8.5" in your sump. I had one and that seemed to be the sweet spot for me. I ran at that level and closed the wedge pipe untill the water level in the skimmer body was 1" below the max water mark, wedge pipe around 30-40% closed. Skimmed not too dry but not too wet either. Some systems will differ depending on the bio load

Thank you.I'll add some water and raise the ato sensor.I had a deltec ts 1250 and it needed lower level
