Skimmer Q&A Thread

Now I'm confused I look at Reef Dinamics and they have the original Euroreef Modified Sedra 3500 pump for my skimmer but is listed at $160.00 !OUCH! Do I really need this modified pump or just the regular one listed in my other post will work fine.

Mojo !!! Would like your opinion on this one :D

300G Display
125G Sump
125G Propagation
60G Refugium

~450-500G Net Total Volume ...

Which option ?:

1. Vertex Alpha 300 Kone

2. Reef Octopus XP-5000 Cone and XP-1000SSS Cone

3. Reef Octopus XP-8000 Cone (overkill to the point of inefficiency ?)

Feel free to add any suggestions as well !

need some help please..We just filled our tank up all the way to fill the sump which is a pro flex model 4 sump and we have a super reef octupus 3000 int skimmer in the last chamber..The water level is about 9 inches from base of skimmer up but is not up to the water level line..If we filled it up that much and our electricity went out the sump would overflow so we are not sure if it is ok being about 3 inches below the water level line on the skimmer..Any advice would be greatly appreciated..Thanks

I don't know where to set the breaking bubbles in the neck. I have a light bio load in a 120 gallon tank. It's in 7 1/2 inches of water. I can't get any foam in the cup.

Is it possible to run effluent from a calc reactor to a SRO3000ext if the skimmer feed is from the manifold or do I need a separate pump?

Hi all,
Looking to upgrade my skimmer. I have a mixed reef, medium fish load, 180 g with 40-45 ish g sump. Currently I'm running an ASM G2 which is pretty old and probably quite under sized. They were good back about 6 yrs ago. Looks like technology has gotten much better lately but I don't know much about all the new brands.

I'm looking to not spend more than $375 and see the reef octopus seems to get good reviews. However there seems to be a ton of different lines. I see reef octopus extreme and super reef octopus etc.

What are the differences? Or any other brands around that price range?

Thanks much
Andrew

the xs 200 would be better for your water volume. the nac 7 isnt quite large enough the 180

Mojo: I'm sorry one more question. Of these 4 models, what do you think would work best for my 180g start up?

Super Reef Octopus XP 2000 ($445)

Reef Octopus 8" Pinwheel ($280)

Reef Octopus 8" Recirculating ($350)

Reef Octopus Extreme 8" XS200 ($325)

I can't seem to decide on which one to buy since they're all relatively in the the same price range. I've been skimmer researching for over 2 weeks now and I want to start off on the right foot with this build; however can't seem to pull the trigger on this piece of equipment.

Thanks and looking forward to your response!

Mojo. Over the past few days of mulling over this skimmer purchase/decision, without your valuable input, Ive added a couple higher price point skimmers to the mix that I originally didnt want to consider ... Youre killing me :D

The ATB Deluxe 10.5 and the Bubble King Supermarin 300 (Generation I) !

As a recap:

300G Display
125G Sump
125G Propagation
60G Refugium

~450-500G Net Total Volume ...

Which option ?:

1. Vertex Alpha 300 Kone

2. Reef Octopus XP-5000 Cone and XP-1000SSS Cone

3. Reef Octopus XP-8000 Cone (overkill to the point of inefficiency ?)

4. ATB Deluxe 10.5

5. Bubble King Supermarin 300 (Gen I)

Which would be your top 3 choices in order ? Preferably w/ some info as well

System will be bacteria/hybrid ZEOvit with medium-(eventually)heavy bioload throughout ...

Look forward to hearing your opinion(s) !

Thank you in advance.

Morning MoJo,

Ive been running a Softie, lps tank for 4+ years with no skimmer, just socks in a modded wet dry and 20% water changes every week, i have a friend that wants to give me his year old ASM G2,(he broke his tank down) should i go with the "it aint broke, why try and fix it" or install this skimmer and see if it helps improve the color and quality of my tank? Im thinking its a liitle small for my tank, but for the price(free) im wondering if it couldnt hurt to have it on the system. BTW ive got a 220 DT with a modded wet/dey that holds maybe 20 gallons. tank has around 400 pounds of live rock , 10 or so of fish and packed with softies and a few LPS.Thanks for your help.

the water level is the level inside the skimmer. not in the sump that you are refering too. that skimmer should be ran from 6 to 7 inches.

the sro 3000 int would be the one to get. The JNS sk3 would be really nice but just over your price.
