Have these skimmers been around a while? I am suprised I haven't got any feedback about this skimmer...

I have been looking at the Reef octopus BH100T that has the built in auto top off. I haven't found much about this skimmer and wonder if anyone uses or used one to find out if this is a good skimmer ATO combo. This would be for my 30g QT.

I've been looking at skimmers for a 170 gallon reef tank I'm getting and came across the Bubble Magus BM-NAC7 Cone Protein Skimmer on BRS. For under $300 and with all of the good reviews, it seems to be a solid choice.

Any thoughts? I'd hate to go cheap and regret it immediately, but at the same time, I'm not looking to spend $600-800 on a skimmer at the moment. I was even thinking of laying off a skimmer for awhile given the lower bio load (4 fish) with no corals/anenomes. From what I've been told a skimmer is a must, unless this isn't entirely true in my case.

that skimmer is too small. THe atman 2500 pump will not come close to cycling enough water to support 170g tank.
I would go with a sro 3000 or jns sk3/aquamaxx cone 3 as my top two choices. THe Next bet would be the seaside aquatics cs2 or the octo xs 200. Those would both work as well. just depends on your load.

the 5.5 would be a better choice in my opinion. IT will move a little more water. I have one of these right now. It compares to the skim 121 or wm 121. Very comparable skimmers.

Mojo, how does the new Sea Side Aquatics ES5 stack up against these skimmers? I have a 55g w/ ~10g sump (the sump is a 30g but has roughly 10g of water running through it) mixed reef, mainly SPS. If you had to choose between these 4 skimmers and the SRO-1000INT & XP-1000SSS, which one would you pick? These seem to be the best sub-$350 skimmers and want to know what you would choose?

I would go with the 1000 int. It is well balanced and gives you the most reaction time as well. Thats what I would get if it were my money on our setup.

the Tunze 9006 would also be in your price range after you get the sump kit for it.

Great thread Mojo but here is my dilemma i just recently switch from a regular 65g tank to a 60 cube 24x24x24 so space for a sump is very limited. I was running an ATB 840 on my 65g and it was great but i had planned to upgrade to a 150g not a 60g. The ATB is quite large for my system and so is its footprint so what would you recommend for a sps dominated 60g with 20g sump with heavy bio load that is a space saver style or one that would fit in a im not worried about price but if you could give me a few different options that would be highly appreciated.

Well since I haven't heard anything about the BH100T the next question to ask is what would be a good skimmer for a 30-40g QT that will stay up all the time?

The sro 1000 hob, or the tunze 9005/6 and you can set it in the tank. That way if it were to ever overflow it goes into the tank rather than the floor.
The other really nice HOB would be the Aquamaxx hob 1

mojo~ Thanks for the recommendation! I went with the Aquamaxx. I liked how everything is internal to the skimmer and the waste cup has a overflow. I bought a JBJ to take care of the ATO.

I have a skimz 121 with a failed pump, are there alternative pumps I can buy for this as trying to find a vendor in canada that has the es2000 has been difficult and skimz isn't responding.

The sicce psk 400 would be a good replacement for the eden. They use it on the seaside aquatics 5.5

Hey Mojo,

So I have a Euroreef CS6-1 and my pump has burnt out. Its the original Dolphin that they came with and I was wondering which pump would be a good replacement. My bio-load is heavy SPS and fish with a 30 gallon sump fuge. I was wondering about the Sedra 5000 or a bubble blaster pump. Any help would be awesome.

What would you recommend for a 183g display cube for a skimmer? I would love to stay around 250 and no more than 300 if at all possible. It will primarly be a FOWLR tank but will have some ricordia and such in it to give some other color. Bioload will eventually be heavy.

Hey mojo, great thread. I have an aquamedic turbo 3000 skimmer, my system is about 1500 litres. Do I need to upgrade. Apologies in advance if you have already rated this skimmer, big thread.

Hey Mojo,

This is a great thread and appreciate the time you have put into this. I have a 210 display with a 100 gal sump. I just installed a pellet reactor and would like to upgrade my skimmer. My bio load is not heavy but would like to get it that way. I am looking at the ATB 1050 v1.5, but I noticed you recommend a few skimmers for equivalent water volume. Is the 1050 worth the extra $$$ over the Reef Octopus Cone? If you had your choice what would your top 5 be regardless of cost?
