Skimmer Q&A Thread

Cone 5 is a seriously nice skimmer. Best on your list.

Thanks, how conservative are they with their skimmers ratings? I just wonder if it could handle a heavy load on a 300 gallon sps tank. Ive seen this skimmer recommended for tanks in the 200 gallon range.

The cone 5 with 1500 lph of air and a 10" body would be good for a 300 gallon. The cone 3 would skim a 200 easily. Keep in mind that these skimmers on the tank sizes I mentioned are not oversized. You could absolutely put a 12" skimmer on a 300 gallon (the cone 6) if you wanted to go with an oversized skimmer and you could put a 10" skimmer (cone 5) on a 200 gallon tank.

Dyeguy...I have taken months to get my new Deltec SC1455 running but i had the settings and height all wrong...now good. When trying to get it going Deltec customer service in Germany suggested feeding it with some thawed frozen bloodworms into the intake....that will fire it up. I have not tried it personally but was about to when another member gave me setting advice. Here is a paste of the email from Deltec.

"the skimming behaviour is in line with the description of your set up and
additives you use. You can do a few things to ease the situation_
- stop the skimmer until the water is mature, could be a few weeks
- use the skimmer, but empty the cup every hour or whenever it is full
- take a few cubes of frozen red blood worms and allow it to melt and to be
sucked in by the skimmer."

Hope this is helpful

I'm looking to upgrade my skimmer since I upgraded my tank and need advice. I have an 80 gallon with a 29 gallon sump (calculated total water at less than 100). I'm looking at an Aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 or a Bubble Magus Curve 5. I was looks at a RO NWB150 but the footprint is just a little too big.
Is Marine Depot the only ones that sell AquaMaxx? I can't find who else sells them. Thanks!

aquarium specialty also has them

Thanks reeftivo! Do you have experience or an opinion on either one of these skimmers?

I own the aquamaxx ConeS CO 1 but not the curve 5

Really good mid $ range skimmer

The coneS CO 2 would give you heavier stocking options and has a larger capacity cup. The CO 1 would work for you but with that size system and depending on the bioload, you may need to run a skimmate locker because the cup capacity is much less than the CO 2 and 3

That's what I'm leaning towards but they are back ordered 4-6 weeks:(

cant keep them on the shelves! I'm still waiting to see a negative review of the ConeS series. I'm sure some will pop up but for now they are performing well right out of the box with no need for any significant mods. It's still early but so far so good!

Figures:hmm6: Maybe 4-6 weeks is worst case scenario;)

I flippin' love that design. I only hope to see one in action soon!!!

+1, I've already emailed them requesting information on when a 6" one will be available. They intend to make one in the future.

I may go with OBD.
I've wanted one of those since they first came out.

They can make custom size skimmer bodies and also chop different size air stone manifolds,
as well as use different colored acrylic and pvc. so lots of options with this skimmer, totally customizable. :)

my only concern with the feed is if you cant control the flow into the pellet reactor, it would tumble the pellets too much and you would get too much sheering for the pellets to coat well with the mulm. Am I wrong?

OR, maybe the small pump is matched so that would not be an issue-HMMM?

well they feed it with the maxi-jet 1200, so I doubt that its too much flow, but you could always put a 1/2" valve on the pump inlet if you wanted to adjust.

Questions...

First I wanted to say thank you to everyone in this thread... I don't post much as most of my questions are answered just by reviewing past information.

My question is well many... the more I read the more I have questions when it comes to skimmers and I'm hoping you guys are able to clarify a few things for me. Here is some of the questions listed out to make it easier.

First my Information on my tank and what I have learned about the skimmers..

Tank Information:
--------------------------------
Type: Reef Tank
Tank Size: 75
Sump Size: 20
Total water: 75 to 80
Bioload: Medium heavy to heavy

Skimmer Requirements:
---------------------------------------
1. Cost up to $350
2. The best skimmer possible for the money
3. Good reliable pump
4. Low noise - as much as possible

Skimmer List and what I have learned...
-----------------------------------------------------------------

1. Aquamaxx EM200 - Ok from what I have read this is a good skimmer but may be to big for my tank...however I have seen people post that they are using it around 80 gallons and others say it will just not skim as well as the EM100 on my size tank...

2. Aquamaxx EM100 - Good skimmer but has issues with the water splashing do to the outlet pipe position... fixable... but still a potential problem and would this fit my tank better??

3. Aquamaxx ConeS CO-1 - New skimmer design...no complaints as yet good pump but new so not proven..may not be strong enough for my tank.

4. Aquamaxx ConeS CO-2 - New skimmer design...no complaints looks like a top performer high demand for this skimmer but may be to big for my tank as some people have posted.

5. Vertex Omega 150 - New skimmer may be good not proven yet... great construction .. PremiumEQ likes the skimmer but not much to back this up yet may be unbalanced as some have said.

6. INS80 - Has been around for a while but the question is can it handle my tank

7. INS100 - Has been around for a while but will this be better than some of the other skimmers that cost less.. also the pumps from what I understand are not as good as the ones Aquamaxx is using.

8. INS135 - Has been around may be to big for my tank however its a question as Jeff from Reef D... talks about getting the biggest skimmer possible.. but that is contradictory to what I understand you should do.

9. Reef Octopus DNW150 Recirculating Skimmer - From what I have read Recirculation Skimmers are better than normal skimmer design as they have better contact time.. but how much better.

10. Reef Octopus DNW110 Recirculating - May be to small not sure how good the pumps are on the Reef Octopus...

11. Bubble Magus BM-NAC7 - They have been around for a while...not sure if other skimmers will do a better job... and this one may be to big.. also the pumps.. not sure if they are any good.

12. Bubble Magus BM-NAC3+ - This may be to small not sure..

13. RLSS Waveline R-6i - Hear good things little pricey from what I can tell but not sure how they compare

14. JNS SK2 - This skimmer is what I gather the same things as the Aquamaxx...may be way to much skimmer..

QUESTIONS>>>
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Are recirculating skimmers like the Reef Octo DNW150 that much better.

2. If the recirculating skimmers are better does that mean they can better handle a larger tank and pull more DOC with less idling time..

3. Should I do the Plus 1 as a lot of people in the past have been talking about or maybe things have changed as others have said and we don't need to do that anymore.

4. Are the pumps the most important thing as some have said.

5. Out of all the skimmers in the list and I may have left some out.. which one would you get and why..

Thanks Guys.. sorry of the book...just thinking out loud after all the reading I have been doing over the last month...

Seemac, All great questions and the same ones I had in researching out a new skimmer. Your tank specs and budget are the same as mine. All of the skimmers you listed were on my list as well. I just ordered the Aquamaxx Cone CO1 (on back order) because of the Sicce pump, small footprint size, quietness and good reviews. The JNS is the same as the Aquamaxx from the research I've done.
I think the reliability of the pump and being able to take the skimmer apart to clean are important. I'm sure others with much more experience and expertise will chime in soon:)

So I just bought an sca-302 skimmer and when I went to Turn it on the red plate and cylinder won't stay on the pump am I missing something or am I just not using it right?

Newsmyrna80... Thanks for the reply...there are so many options to consider...just trying to get the right size is one of the big questions I have..

The bubble box should slide over the threaded output on the pump and be secured with plastic nut. The red BB plate then goes on top and the bolt goes through and should thread down into the tapped hole on the bottom.

I agree! I've read you should pick a skimmer that is rated for at least 1 1/2x your water volume. I used a website to calculate mine and it came to 90 gallons so I would need a skimmer that is rated for 135 gallons. You can always get one that's bigger and it will idle if there is nothing to skim but that usually means more $.
There are so many options I actually did a spreadsheet to sort it all out and it took a few days to do it:headwally:
Not to add to the confusion but I also had on my list a Bubble Magus Curve 5. They're about $200.
