Skimmer Q&A Thread

I have a Red Sea 25-250 gallon triple pass skimmer that I need parts for. I am having a very hard time finding help. Any ideas of where I can go? Or is there a newer skimmer that you can recommend. I tend to feed heavy in a 90 gallon reef tank.

Look at the ATB Nano One.

I continue to get inconsistent skimmate from my SRO 2000 INT and am looking at replacing it. It's much too sensitive to little changes like which filter sock I use or even time of day. I think its time of day because nothing changes, but the level in the skimmer will change. There are some days in which it's consistent but then goes back to fluctuating. The knob to adjust air intake from the pump isn't smooth so adjustments are not very fine.

I'm going to contact Coralvue for one last attempt at improvement. In the event it doesn't help, I'd like to ask everyone what they've found to be the best quality skimmer. I'm not concerned about cost. It does need to be in sump. My DT is 120G and my sump is 35G.

I'm considering the NYOS 160 as the 120 doesn't have a drain on the cup. Not sure if going with a 160 is overkill and will negatively effect performance. There's very little known about these skimmers right now, so a little risky.

I've heard Deltec are good but there aren't many distributors around. I've also read Aquamaxx is good. Bubble Magus get very good reviews for a low cost skimmer, just not sure of the build quality.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Look at the ATB 840

I don't have it set up in anything yet. It will go in a sump. At this point I'm ready to go with something else because if I need parts again I want to be able to get them.

If it will be in sump then you've got lots of great options and I'd look at something else other then that red sea skimmer.

A few months ago I upgraded from a 40 breeder with 20 gallon sump to a 93 gallon cube with 75 gallon sump. I moved my Reef Octopus NWB 110 over to the new tank from the 40. I haven’t had any complaints with the skimmer, but I’m guessing it’s a little undersized for this tank.

Recently, my brother decided that he would like to setup my old 40 breeder and asked me to recommend a skimmer for it. Does it make more sense to sell him the RO NWB 110 and upgrade the skimmer on the 93? If so, I’m looking for suggestions on which skimmer to get. Thanks for the help!

NWB 110 is rated:
BIOLOAD HANDLING:
"¢130 Gallons- Light
"¢90 Gallons- Medium
"¢75 Gallons- Heavy

I would sell him the NWB 110 and get something that will handle your water volume which is now about 150 gal?

If you want to look at ATB skimmers you would say look at the ATB 840v2.

Thanks for the recommendation but I'm hoping to find something for about half that price. It looks like a nice skimmer though.

How much space do you have? I'd look for around a 6" body, 3" neck, 900-1200lph (32-42scfh) air draw.

Thanks, Jason- I'll keep those specs in mind. My skimmer section is 11" x 16". Clearance isn't an issue, the sump is in my basement without anything above it.

Hello All!
Had a quick question and I hope to get some advice. My buddy is setting up his 150 gallon aquarium with a 40 gallon sump. I was wondering what would be a solid protein skimmer for a 150 that will have mostly softies and some LPS. He's looking to spend no more than $300.
Thanks in advance!

For that tight of a budget I'd go with the Aquamaxx EM200

Get it now though as it's getting replaced by the Q series and is about $20-30 more.

Which is also a fine skimmer.

Didn't even realize it but it's been exactly 9 months now since running the SSA ES2. And still extremely happy with it. It has been very consistent and constantly producing ~1 cup every single day. Absolutely no overflowing, no constant adjusting, or any other annoyances I've had in the past with some skimmers. I did have one hiccup 3 days ago. The skimmer was working perfectly one moment as I was filling up my ATO and at some point with in a few hour period I went down to the sump to do a nightly check and the skimmer wasn't working at all. I figured great there goes another skimmer. But excited as then I get to try out a new skimmer. lol

Took it apart and a astrea star or two wandered it's way in and jammed up the pump. Decided to go ahead and just do a full complete cleaning. Soaked and ran everything through some vinegar and rinsed it all off. Looked good as new.

This didn't slow it down at all and 3 days later I got to clean out just over 3 cups of thick, stinky, nastiness.

For being cheap and considered to be "under rated" it's produced better and more consistently then anything else I've ever owned. I want to try out a few other skimmers like the Life Reef or the new Q series Aquamaxx but I just can't find a fault with this little skimmer.

Below is the Original Post from when I got it. Funny thing was a few posts before this I was told this skimmer was not going to be big enough unless I have a very light load. I'm fairly overstocked with 3 tangs, 3 dwarf angels, 3 anthias, 2 wrasses, 2 clowns, 2 mandarins, 1 bangaii cardinal, 1 yellow watchman, 1 sand sifter goby, 1 file fish, and 1 leopard wrasse, 4 bubble tip anemones, mushrooms, Duncan, Fiji yellow leather, sponges up the wazoo, stars, feather dusters, many shrimp, crabs, snails, worms, bagazillion pods, etc. I might be missing something I'm sure

Then I don't feed lightly either. Pellets are automatically fed 4 times a day, feed 2-3 feedings of meaty foods by hand, and 1 sheet of algae every day.

So, my SRO3000sss I had just before this SSA ES2 was so extremely inconsistent and periodically overflowed I'd rather be undersized.

I got the Sea Side Aquatics ES2 in today! That was pretty fast. It could have been boxed a bit better. The pump was kind of loose unpackaged in there but everything else was packaged and wrapped up well. Really wasn't much room for the pump to move but wasn't expecting it to just be laying there when I took the top foam layer off.

First impressions are good. Material seems like really good quality. 1/4" acrylic used for the body and collection cup. The seem could have been polished out but I was expecting it as its in all the photos I've seen.

I really like the design of it overall. Easy 1/4 turn cup removal. The exit/vent pipe can easily be positioned exactly the direction you want and super smooth fine adjustments. Haven't seen any microbubbles escaping so far and water exits pretty much at the base. I like it sits lower in the sump then the sro-3000sss does. I have it at just under 9" of water right now. I love that the base attaches to the body. I really hated the SRO just pressed together and very easily came apart. Otherwise nothing really special about the rest of it. Standard cone and standard bubble plate with count sunk drilled holes. It is a bit bigger then it looks in the pictures but not much.

The listed dimensions are spot on and nice small foot print being a sump saver design and the straight up exit/vent/adjustment pipe. The cone just above the pump is slightly under 8". The neck is about 4.5". I believe it will be a well balanced skimmer with the psk1000 in there. I'm really hoping for long term stability that I didn't quite have with the sro3000sss. Time will tell. I would say though I wouldn't put this on anything over a 180.

Then the most important part to my wife and future guests, this is by far the quietest skimmer I've ever not heard. As long as it stays this way my wife will be super happy and that will make me even happier. I modified the output of the SRO with a T and vent pipe. There's a crazy $50 piece you can buy separate but made my own for under $5. But you could still hear it in the room next door. The only noise I can hear on this ES2 is if I put my ear right up to the air intake silencer or lift the lid off and hear the fizz of the bubbles.

Putting the skimmer together was really easy and didn't realize there was directions until I was done and throwing everything in the box. The only issue I had was the bubble plate nylon screw was to long. In order to tighten it down so the top plate wasn't loose it would push the entire housing up and not be level. So I got a small piece of tubing that fit over the scew and used it as sort of a washer. Its just something I had laying around I could easily trim to size.

Had to put a spacer to secure the plate and allow it to remain level and not be pushed up

Output fully open and facing the camera. After putting in the sump I took the pipe out and reversed its direction.

Now to let it break in and wait to see if I goofed or not

Bubble Magus C3.5

Bubble Magus C3.5

Hi Guys,
I am having problems with my skimmer, where its just constantly filling the collection cup up. its a Bubble Magus C3.5. I have it in 9" of water, and on maximum. I have tried it at all different levels and still just have constant over flow and filling of the collection cup.
Does anyone else have this skimmer and help out with ideas I can try. Its brand new, so maybe this is normal for a few days until it breaks in, I'm not sure. First time I have ever owned a Skimmer. As mentioned I have tried it buy holding it at different levels, but the foam just fills the cup no matter what.
Thanks
Luke

Skimmers do need to break in. You may want to try raising it a little to 8" or 7"

I have tried raising it, with some acrylic blocks I had cut to size today at work, they are 1/2" think each, and tried getting the bubbles to come just to the top of the cone. I tried one at a time trying to get it right. I failed to achieve that.

have you dosed anything, particularly medications like prazi, recently in the past month or so? Do you run any GAC(carbon)? If not I would try running some for a bit to see if it may pull something out of the water that could cause excessive foaming.

Did you rinse the pump and body of the skimmer inside and out? Use vinegar? If not I would pull it out and rinse it all out with vinegar and fresh water first. I've seen some people just run them in a tub full of water and some vinegar for a few hours and helps.
