Skimmer Q&A Thread

Do you think there would be any advantage to adding a pinwheel and venturi to an Eheim 1260 that I have on my Elos NS 500?
TIA,
Ben

Looking for opinons on the Vertex In 100 versus the MRC ocean force 100 for a 58 mixed reef. I really like the set and forget idea; which one is the least likely to have to 'tweak' repeatedly in your opinions ?

Also what's the ideal water level for the MRC ? The Vertex is 6-8 correct?

No your skimmer is not designed to be ran that way. I would leave it alone or sell it off to fund a new one.

The MRc and vertex will be close to the same in water level 7 to 8 inches. probably about 9 on the mrc would be ok too. I think the MRC is a little nicer skimmer but its hard to beat the value of the vertex. they are on sale this month 20% off at marine depot too.

I want the best skimmer for my setup. Would you recommend spending $400 more on 8.5 deluxe or should I buy regular ATB 840 1.5 for my 120g SPS system? Will I see noticeable, except for lighter wallet ? Lol

And if anything, I wish water was more standardized than anything. How much water they process, and then someone could at least make a better educated guess at what kind of turnover rate they wanted for their setup.

Does a rule of thumb even exist for skimmer turnover rate for a given tank size???

Hey Mojo, what's your .02?

Te deluxe does add more reaction time and a little more efficient skimming action. However, The atb 840 1l5 is a heck of a skimmer. I think you will be just fine with the 840.

I dont know which skimmer i should choose between the MSX250A or Super Reef Octopus 5000sss for 150gal? or what would be advisable

that would be a tough choice the 250A is a great skimmer but I might go with the 5000ss with the new bubble blaster pump.

Good luck to you all.

Mojo what would you say is the best skimmer for a 90 gallon with sump mixed reef with lots of fish. earlier you recomended the vertex 180 for the price... if price isnt an issue is there anything better? since i know ill end up overstocking the tank i want a sweet skimmer i was looking at the Precision Marine Bullet-2 Protein Skimmer cause i like the fact i can plumb it externaly.. what do you think.. any others that are similar or in sump skimmers that are better. Thak you so much for your time and advice.

Price no issue,
ATB 840, Bubble king mini 180. These areprobablythe best you can buy for performance and ease of use and balance. Depending on sump space and level. The warner marine AS 200 vertex in 180 and octo cone would be some cheaper options.
I would stay away from some of the other overhyped skimmers on the market. They are not balanced well at all. That makes them hard to adjust and to ability of keeping a quality reef is maintaining a stable enviroment. it all about a balance. And well if you are spending all your time playing with your skimmer then you are taking away from your reef.

You can't go wrong with the 840.

Well the new bubbe blaster pumps are using better internal parts for one. THey made improvements on the bearing/bushing assemblies of the pump and have done improvements that have allowed it to perform well at a low wattage. . And I said I might. Their is a little hesitation their as the pump hasnt been proven long term. its not just about pump. its about balance of the skimmer. I keep saying this but I dont think many people get it. It not how much air can you shove in the skimmer. Its how does teh air and water mixture relate to the size of the body, and the neck.

Those two skimmers are nearly the same body with a different pump. One proven, one not. I was just curious why you thought the unproven one was a better choice.

Any opinions if an SWC/MSX 160 or Octo 160 would out perform the Elos NS 500 I currently run on my 50 gallon primarily SPS system? Do the SWC/MSX and Octo both have restart issues? I also think I read somewhere in this thread that the SWC/MSX had a better pinwheel over the Octo, correct?
TIA,
Ben
