Skimmer Q&A Thread

hi Mojo, do you have any experience or knowledge about reef octopus 100 H20. i have a nano system that about 45G. my tunze nano pump had died, so iam looking for a replacement now. thanks.

I've been waiting to ask this until I hooked up my ATO and ran it for a week w/ constant levels in the sump, and its been a week so here ir goes.

The new ATB 840 is one good looking skimmer!
It came w/ an extra pinwheel, apparently the large one came in the pump and the extra was the small. so I left the large in. I built a stand for it and have the water level 6.5" from the bottom of the skimmer.

My 92 corner is modestly stocked w/ 5 fish, the largest being a six-line.
I feed spectra pellets at least twice / day, usually three.
My sump has about 20 gal. in it. The drain goes thru a sock.

Anyway, I can't seem to get anything darker than light tea colored skimmate.
When I open it a touch to run it dryer, It doesn't produce any!
So I leave it a couple days and decide to close it back (just a touch), and it overflows!

Do you think my bio-load is enough for the skimmer?
Should I switch the pinwheels?
Should I change the water level?

I'm getting frustrated and slightly dissapointed.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah... anyone elses valve on the cup drain leak?
I don't have a remote collector yet and just keep the valve closed but it has a slow drip.

Thanks again!

I personally would put in the small wheel run it at about 7 inches of water and let it go. set it where you think it should be and snap me a pic of what yuo have going on. That would be helpful.

why not just replace the pump?
the octos are ok but nothing special.
the wm h1 would be a good choice.

just another question on skimmers? does cone shape skimmer perform better or has the same rating than a half cone skimmer with the same pump?

Hi Mojo! Thanks for all the work you've put into this thread!

I have a 55g mixed reef with 5 fish and a DSB. My AquaC Remora is ancient and not working well, despite cleanings and pump changes. And I'm ready to tear my hair out trying to select a skimmer.

I read many pages of this thread and you seem to like the Warner Marine H2, but it's out of stock everywhere. I'm now thinking of the Reef Octopus BH 100 F (the surface skimmer is appealing), but I've heard some horror stories with getting them set up. What do you think? Do you have another recommendation?

Thanks again!

I'll try and take a stab at this one Jesse.
IMO there is not much difference between cone or half cone.I don't think a longer transition is any better than a shorter one. I think you have to look for a well balanced skimmer.
Correct me if I wrong Jesse.

Mojo~

Yes, I was planning on doing that on thursday.

I also set up with the skimmer, a 4" filter sock for the first time. I've been changing it about every 4-5 days.
Could this reduce skimmer performance?

I'll report back late-week.

Thank you again for your response!

Hard to say. But the full cone is a little less turbulent but a longer transition is nice.

you could go with the Bermuda Rouge, Deltec mce 600 I think it is. there is a nice SRO model HOB as well.

Mojo~ I am fairly new to this forum and enjoy reading your assessment of skimmers so far. I would like to get you thought on the ASM 2 verses the Vertex IN-100 ?

Hi Mojo,
I have been running a asm g-4 on my 180 for over 7 years and am planning on getting
this one as an upgrade, Super Reef Space Saver Octopus 3000SSS. Will this be a good choice for me?
Thanks,
Vic

both good skimmers, but the vertex new gen 3 is really a nice skimmer for the $$.

Yeap, that would be a very good choice for your setup.
SRO 3000 series
atb 1050

Mojo~

Anyone have info on any of these yet? I am really liking the looks and all, for the one in the 5th link.
My tank will now end up being around 275 gallons for the tank, and sump. I will then add some sort of frag tank later. So these look really promising, since the price for the bubble magus has looked good on some of the others

Thanks mojo~ for the prompt response, I think I will go ahead and pickup the vertex new gen 3, that should save me some $$ to spend on a few sps.

Keep up the good work.

Not a problem. The only one I do not suggest is the 250 as it is 30 in tall and it has a lot of head pressure for the pump.
