Skimmer Q&A Thread

Hey mojo, I'm about to start a 90 gallon with a 30 gallon sump/fuge. I got different people tellin me to get a vertex in-180. And others telling me to get a ASM G3. Which would you recommend or would you recommend another skimmer? Thanks

The Vertex over the ASM in a heart beat. Another smaller but great skimmer is the WM as 150. For the 90g, Same as me
I would be looking at the following.
Vertex in 180
BK mini 180 gen 2
ATB 840
vertex in 100
wm as 150
wm S 150
wm= warner marine.

Even some of the tunze skimmers are pretty good for the $$.

sorry I dont have the resourses to test all the bk mini models. I tested the one. But from the specs of the gen 2 200 I would say up to a 200 g tank with a heavy load sps tank.

Good luck

Im am sure it will perform well, nothing really changed other than the new body I believe. I had really good luck with the 840 I had.

First let me say thanks for all the skimmer reviews you have done. It is greatly appreciated.

I am looking for a skimmer recommendation for my 400g tank.
Currently I am running a MRC MR7 with a hammerhead pump. The power consumption is one issue with this skimmer, but I am not really please with its performance either. So I am looking for a new skimmer. I have only used beckett skimmer so I dont really know to much about the newer type skimmer on the market. This is where u come in. LOL

Tank is 400g Barebottom
100g sump
65g fuge/frag tank
550lbs live rock
60+ SPS
15 small fish, plan on adding several larger fish soon

I am looking for a internal skimmer so I can redo my sump area.
Any suggestions?

Orr got a budget? I would put A low and a high figure out and see what people say, there are quite a few skimmers that would rock on a 400g for under 1500.

ATB 1250 not sure on price as it is a new model with no info released, it will be same size as the old large.

MSX/swc 1A cone

alpha cone300?

Hurricone cat2

MSX 300A with askoll

BK supermarin 300, price is on the high side.

Just read whole thead- WHEW! Thank you all so much, and especially MOJO for coming back and answering all these questions, researching, and posting your experiences.

You really do help all of us save time and money and probably corals by helping us make a better choice sooner.

I have a thread or two, here and there about my insane nitrate problem (cough80ppmcough)... I want to try vodka dosing, and in researching this, I am thinking my skimmer may be undersized.

I have a 60gal tank with a HOB fuge and a Euroreef sump (maybe like 20 gallons at most, probably usually has around 8-12 gals.. i really need to measure and actually calculate that :-P)

With rock displacement I figure I have roughly 70 gal NWV
mixed tank, mostly softy and LPS

I currently run the ASM Mini-G with a new G300 pump and no mods. It does not skim that great. In fact, since the new pump (a month ago) I have not emptied the cup more than twice. :-/

From other comments for other setups I have gathered that you recommended the MRC OF 100 as well as the Vertex IN 180
From these two I already lean to the vertex.

I have pretty decent space in my sump (prolly a good 10" by 10" for a skimmer footprint (though I must go confirm this!)

It seems I will need to put down a good $300 for this (maybe I can find someone on RC who is upgrading) but I am hoping not to go above that. I would prefer not a HOB, but I do have room in the stand for an external if that is best.

thanks so much!

Yeah, I am looking in the $1000 to $2000 range.

The ATB large, Warner MArine AS300, or the BK super MArin 250 is one of the nicest units out there. I would be checking those out. Not sure if its big enough. but take a look. it would be really close.

The Vertex in 180 is too big for that. it has a 8 inch body plus the pump off the side. MAybe look at the ocean force again. Or better yet maybe a Tunze skimmer. They have a small foot print though and will skim really well for your setup. If you are going to go vodka you should make sure you introduce some bacteria like microbacter 7 first. then wait about a week to start dosing vodka. start off really small doses and work your way up. The vodka will be your carbon source and you will need to skim that out.
Another good little skimmer for you would be the warner marine s 125. moves more water than the vertex in 80 and uses a sedra 5000 pump i believe. just another option.

Good luck with the dosing and skimmer.

I have a 180 gallon tank and will be getting a sump (dont know the size yet, probably like a 60-75 gal). The DIY sump I have now is only about 40 gallons and people here are telling me its small for a 180. Anyway, I was wondering what kind of skimmer to get? I want what everyone wants, economic and reliable.

Well their are several nice ones to choose from. I would look at the following.
The ATB 1050
BK mini gen 2 200
Warner Marine as 200
MSX 250A
hurricone Cat 1
And the Vertex in 280 <--- This skimmer would be my budget pick.
THe hurricone and max with the askol pump would be a really ice skimmer for your tank and if you can swing the extra money I think it would be worth it long term. However what do you plan on keeping? you might be able to go a little smaller depending on what you stock list will be

Mojo~

The vertex 100 has teh same pump as the 80 but the larger body makes more use of it. I would go with the vertex in 100.

Which skimmer did you mean when you said "max" above, the MSX?
