This is just under 48hrs. :D

BTW the turbulence in the neck is almost gone. I expect this thing to get better and better.

you are skimming REALLY wet. but other than that it looks good.

That's how like it. Works better with my feeding habits and bio-load.

looks good. Not trying to minimize the excitement but they are starting to look the same. lol/ really light gadgets but other than that. And like you said it works for you. And that is really whats important.

Whew, so many pages! Hi Mojo et al, I have a 20 gallon reef tank with a 10 gallon sump (no refugium) and I am looking to replace my Remora skimmer. Bioload: Tank is 4 months old, 25 pounds of live rock covered in coralline algae, shallow sandbed, 2 large LPS corals, a few SPS corals, 15 heads of Dendros, many assorted mushrooms, coco worm, 3 fish, assorted cleanup crew of snails and crabs...so I guess my load is moderate. My sump has only a small section whereby I could put a skimmer but it is only 5.5" width by 9" in length (water level in sump is about 9 inches BTW), and the height of the cabinet is only 28" so I don't have much room to work with. That is why I went with the Remora HOB. Do you have any recommendations for me, I think I would prefer another HOB. Thanks.

I was thinking of that one too, can't decide if the Deltec MCE300, or the ATB Multiuse HOB (it might be too big though) is better. Thanks.

hey mojo, quick questions. i have a euro reef, not sure which model i bought it from a guy using it on a 265, i run it on a 220. do you think a mag 5 is too much water flow through it. also what leve do i want to adust the water too and lastly im not getting any bubbles in it. big problem. any ideas?
thanks man!!

A 9.25"x5.25" size would be just big enough for an H&S 90-F1000, 9.25"x4.25" if you point the venturi straight up. Supposedly runs in 8+" of water.

I agree with Mojo- the 9002 would be a decent compact skimmer for that setup. Just keep your sump's water level very constant...

Rroselavy, thanks for the reply. I think I may go with the Tunze (I have an auto top-off), but I'm having trouble believing that it would be any better than the Remora, it's in the same price range and me being the noobie thinks that more $ means better equipment. What do you think of the Deltec HOB?

I was not impressed with the old 9002 they just announced a new pump for it that should improve it's performance.

MsMguy, Do you know when the new pump will be available with the 9002 skimmer? Figures...just when I get closer to making a decision, trying to find new stock will be difficult. :( ....I read so many pages of FAQ on the Deltec website and right now it sounds like their HOB skimmer is a bit finicky. argh. Thanks for the reply.

Tunze reportedly works as well as a Remora, but quieter and MUCH more compact.

The MCE300? I have heard pretty good feedback on it, but IIRC, there may be occasional startup issues since the pump is not in-tank. Glassbox-Design just had a brief write-up on what it thinks are the top 5 HOB skimmers. FWIW: The MCE300 makes their list at number four, just behind the heavy hitters. There are enough reviews on the MCE300 here on RC and NR that you will probably find the feedback you are looking for.

If you can get past the fiddly parts, a Tunze 9005/9010 might work very well in that if you are looking for a boost in performance over a 9002. A 9005 is about the same as a MCE300, and the 9005 or 9010 would fit nicely in your sump.

I am testing a Euro-Reef nano skimmer right now in the SUMP of my 55g. It is a dual-pump alloy-meshwheel skimmer in a 3.5" body. The skimmer produces some mighty fine bubbles and production looks promising, but I will hold judgement until I get it fully dialed in. It would fit in the space you indicated, but mine requires 13" of water depth...

If you have 9.25"x 4.25" in your sump, that H&S 90-F1000 may be really nice. They have recently improved the volute/impeller to increase the air draw by over 50%. Same price as the MCE300 or 9005. I will be evaluating one pretty soon I hope.

Hope this is in the right place. I've got an OLD skimmer (15 to 20 years old) - it may be home made by the shop owner I purchased it from. Anyway, the water chamber is about 18" tall and 5" in diameter. It's a ventury type (dang I wish I had spell check)...

My questions are:
1 - when it makes foam it does a really good job of it, but it doesn't always make foam (it's always full of bubbles, not like in the pictures on this forum but bubbles). I see to get more foam production at night. based on very little knowledge I would say it's dry foam but then I have nothing to base that on ther than photos.

2 - it didn't come with a pump and I've been using the same one for the last 15 to 20 years (never worked any better than it doesn now). What size pump would you suggest if I were to replace the current one (it can't last forever).

Thanks,

Brad

Hi mojo,

I'm considering an ATB840 for a heavily fed 500L system. The daily input of food could eventually equal about 30 frozen cubes.

some questions:

- will the skimmer be able to process a lot of fatty foods eg raw salmon, fish roe etc..?
- will there be a problem if its shut down for a few hours during feeding?
- will the 840 be big enough?

thanks for your time :)

Suta if i were you i would put in an order for the ATB 1050a V 1.5, the 840 is a great skimmer but 30 cubes of food is not easy for any skimmer the Askol motor is better suited to that size bioload.

One more question GSMguy. This skimmer is going on my project tank first. Thats only 200L. The feeding equals about 5 cubes daily ATM & increasing steadily. The tank is like a toilet. :( I won't transfer corals etc to the 500L until I'm sure the feeding is working. Will I still be able to successfully use this skimmer on the smaller volume experimental tank?

cheers
angie

Angie - You should be fine with the 1050 1.5 on a 200l tank. The 1050 will handle it with no problem. It's a small water volume, but with the neck size on the 1050 you shouldn't have a problem keeping a stable head.
