I think it would be time to upgrade. Skimmer technology has come as long way. Look at how small the neck on that is. It was designed to move a lot of water with very little air. I havent seen that before. Not saying it wont work. However their are so many budget alternatives out there now that will work better. BAck in the day they made skimmers tall and narrow. then short and fat. Now cone shape.

Sorry I cant be more help but I simply just dont know. Its before my time.
Good luck and if I can help in any other way. let me know.

Nice skimmer Chris, when did you pick it up? How do you like the craftsmanship on that beauty???

I've been getting my money's worth out of my 250 for shizzle~!

Those new ATB's look pretty nice too... they all do a pretty good job I guess.

The ATB and the alpha are built really pretty well. ATB actually took it a step further and polished everything. I mean everything. even the wedge pipe. MY only compaint on the alpha so far is the water coming out of the area where the airline goes into the wedgepipe. I wonder why they didnt just make this higher on the pipe?

did I mention I picked up a 170 as well here it is next to my atb. (which has been skimming for about 3 weeks perfectly I might add).

I was suprised to see how large the 170 was for sure. The skimmer uses the same pump as the other 3 alpha's that are out but they changed the nozzle and the pinwheel.
It comes with two nozzles a 59mm and a 58mm. I almost couldnt tell the difference at first. 1mm difference hmm. It does make a difference though. The skimmer is quiet and well built. But the one drawback is the water coming out of the hole where the airline goes into the wedgepipe. I am not sure why they didnt just have this go into the pipe higher up. problem solved. So we will see. I might have to do something about it.But ill let it run for now. I havent hooked a meter up to it to check air draw yet but I did already switch to the 58mm nozzle.
More to come....

Looks great Mojo. Very interested to see how this works out for you. I'm curious to see how the neck size to air ratio on this one works out. I'm playing with the ATB 840 and the iTech200 now and am really getting to see the difference neck size makes.

Keep 'em comin..

can you verify on a kill a watt if it really uses only 26 watts? that seems pretty low for a pump of this size.

yea I can check it out here in a bit. THe larger neck size and smaller body will make it a little tricky getting it dialed in. but its actually working ok already. I think if I made the nozzle shorter it would produce micro bubbles. so my only complaint so far is the wate coming out the air tube inlet into the wedge pipe.

Hi Mojo,
I am moving my Euro Reef RS 135 up from my 75 Reef to a 125 FOWLR. The system volume will be about 135G. Do you think this skimmer will be able to keep up on a med bioload FOWLR or do I need to upgrade. Thanks

Hey Mojo do you have any experience with the Itech cone skimmers i've been thinking about getting one :D
I have not seen one in person. However I can say by the time you get the skimmer and pump. You might as well buy an ATB 840. Just my 2 cents.

When it comes to cone skimmers, it is to bad this thread is an ATB commercial.

I wouldnt say that really. The K2 is a nice skimmer too. lol. Honestly I am giving the alpha a little time before I say either way. I am not a fan of the water trickling out but have a plan to take care of that. Otherwise it is really quiet and seems to have a head on it about 3 inches thick already. So I can say already the 170 is a better fit than the 250. As far as the other cone skimmers. A lot of them are real similar copies of the atb. look at the new octopus cone skimmers. They look like a promising skimmer. The itech 200 is real similar to an ATB as well. With the big price drops on the ATB 840 and the nice new molded cone they are able to compete with some of the others out there.
If something doesnt work I am going to say so. No matter who makes it.

Best of luck to you all.

Wow, lots of info in this thread. I hadn't even heard of ATB before this thread!

Mojo -
Which what would you recommend for a 300 gallon w/60 gal sump/fuge combo?

I'm looking at the ATB "Medium Cone Skimmer." I'm assuming that's in pump and not overkill for the previously mentioned setup?

Thanks for your input.

its not a ATB commercial, its just that when you've tried the rest you know whats the best. :D when you look at the performance and you factor in Victors customer service, ATB is hard to beat. when you talk about a cone skimmer whats the brand the everyone compares their cone to?
