Skimmer Q&A Thread

Victor does has great customer service. I have dealt with a lot of great people from here though. But I think victor over time becomes more than a retailer. Its more like someone you could sit down and have a drink with. And I could sure use one after this week.

Sorry to hear you have water dripping from the exit pipe. I don't have and dripping from mine, but besides that how are u liking it? I think its gonna take about a week before it really starts to kick in. During the first week mine was producing nog, but now its Kicking some serious butt.

mojo are you luke33?

When it comes to cone skimmers, it is to bad this thread is an ATB commercial.
ATB has done a great job on marketing on these boards. Thats about it. They are just too pricey for the performance. Kinda like the old deltec threads. It comes and go. Next year someone new will be what everyone going with.

ATB does seem to be trying to lower the prices but with them selling so little. They got to still make a lot per skimmer.

The only company i see that seem to be going in the right direction is MSX.

Luke is from the noblesville area and I have emailed him a few times.
Just for the record my name is Jesse. I live about 2 hours from Luke and have never met him. I have met Jeremy and Jonathan from premium aquatics at the frag swap in Indy.
Not that it matters but thought I would get that out of the way. THanks Mojo~ Mojo was a nickname growing up through my wrestling years/

The alpha 170 is actually working ok. Other than the water dripping from the hole it is building a pretty large foam head. I might have to make a little plug to keep the water from coming out there.
Mojo~

Looking forward to hearing your opinion in about a week. Would like to know your thoughts on performance. I already know what u think about the build quality and quietness of the unit. ;)

I'm new to in sump and skimmers in general. How do I tell how deep in the water the skimmer needs to be? I am looking at getting the AquaC Urchin for a 55g tank with 20g sump.

http://www.proteinskimmer.com/Product Pages/Urchin.htm

Most skimmer run well between 6 to 8 inches. Just depends on the skimmer and its design. The urchin is pretty flexible. would say about 7 to 8 inches. You may want to check out the vertex in 100 as well. Good luck with your purchase.
Mojo~

Cool. What the deal with you IN guys and skimmers? haha

Between you two guy you must have own about every skimmer. lol

BTW this is a very good thread. How would u compare the ATB to the MSX?

I currently have a 120 gallon tank with a 75 gallon refugium and a smaller sump (contains 12 gallons when the pumps are running, but has capacity for 36 gallons).

I plan on switching to a larger sump (likely a rubbermaid 100 gallon) in the near future and add a total of 175 more gallons for frags and species tank bringing my total to around 470 gallons. All of the tanks except the display tank are located in the basement, and space is not a prime consideration.

I will have a medium to high bioload with a mixed reef.

I have been researching BK and ATB skimmers. Can someone give me guidance on the BK DeLuxe or Supermarin series and the ATB cone skimmers? What value do these more expense BKs (vs. mini) and ATB (vs. econo) skimmers bring?

Is there an advantage to using external vs. internal? I had initially thought about gravity-feeding to an external skimmer, then flowing into my refugium, then flowing into my sump that I would use as a return area to place my calcium reactor. I wonder if the value vs extra plumbing/risk is worth the effort.

TIA for your help.

Well first off it sounds like quite the project you have going on.

Well the bk and ATB are going to add some attention to detail, ease of use and quality. As far as overall performance for your dollar you can get some other skimmers that will do a pretty good job as well.
You might want to go external but I would be looking at the BK 300 probably, ATB large, hurricone Cat 3, ORCA reeflo, or maybe even go with a pair of msx 250A's.

When you start getting up to that volume of water you may want to consider a beckett skimmer as well. Something like a Bermuda BPS 8c .
Oh I almost forgot wait a couple more weeks and get you a Alpha 300. 3600 lph of air and 6000 lph of water.
http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merc...duct_Code=VX-PS-A300&Category_Code=bubbleking

that would be a good option as well. not %100 sure on this one as they are not out yet but with the dual pumps it should be a monster.

What? how do you know what I think about their build quality?
I don't know any thing about these Skimmers other then they are incredibly over priced.

I am building a 90 gallon tank, and went with an external skimmer as I am trying to manage heat (the system will be kept at 75 degrees)

The skimmer I picked is an Octopus DNWB 150. The question I have is when plumbing it serially with the chiller, do I put the skimmer before or after the chiller? Does it make a difference?

How do you know that? Do you have experience in manufacturing? Are you familar with the costs of the materials, shipping, ect?
What price would make you happy?

Oh and he wasn't talking to you.
