Skimmer Q&A Thread

So whats the verdict on the best depth for the Vertex IN 100? I just got one and have it approximately 8-9 inches deep. I know that the directions say 6-8, but wanted to get an experienced opinion on how much (if any) of a stand to build for it.

i would think when you get a nice froth starting in the neck. They are finiky so it may take some time to get it right.
 
I am planning on getting a new octopus skimmer for my 90. I was thinking of the SRO 2000. However in about 1 year, I will likely upgrade to a 180 or 210. Is there a skimmer that would work well for both of these sizes, or do I need to do another upgrade when I get a larger tank? And finally, would an SRO 3000 internal octopus be too much for a 90g sps tank with a high bioload? Thanks for your input.

The sro 2000 would be good for what you have now. THe 3000 would be too big. You are not going to find a skimmer that will work great on a 90 gallon and a 180 gallon. one or the other.

The cone would be a 6" body with a 4" neck. I just can't seem to find a ton of info on the bubble blaster pumps.

I started a thread with this question before I remembered this thread.
So here it is.


I can't decide.

I have a little over 300G running in my 180g sps, a 40B sps/lps, a 45g frag, a 20g fuge and a 75g sump.

I have been running an old Octo external recirc 200 pin wheel for years.
It was plenty big enough for my old setup of about 160g.

The thing still pulls out plenty of skimmate.
My nitrates are less than 1 and have been forever.
PO4 is undetectable on salifert and I am on backorder for the new hanna meter.

I run GAC and GFO.
I dose vinegar with kalk top-off.

Lots of fish, mainly anthias and I feed a LOT.

I have some dinos and very slight GHA.

I have been looking at the SRO-3000 external.

With the latest stuff I've read saying that there is a limit to the amount of DOCs removed from water by skimming, does it make sense to upgrade?

What skimmer would you suggest for a 100 gal mixed reef with a heavy fish bio load. The sump will probably be 30 to 40 gal and will be set up skimmer / return / refuge.
I have skimmed a few pages of this thread and it look's like i would need swc 160, vertex in 180, or super reef octopus. Which one would you recommend for me, the quieter the better since the tank will be going in a bedroom.
 
Thank you Mojo. Looking to replace my old AquaC EV180 on my 90G sps tank. Just recently plumbed in a 45G frag tank. My sump is 30gallon but probably only holds 15G of water. Have read good things about the Vertex, SWC, and Octo. Your suggestions pretty please. Thank you again Mojo.

Mojo first off thanks for the hard work. Now another questions. I have a 90 gallon SPS with a few LPS. High Bio Load. I would like to have a great skimmer but save any money I can. Would you reccomend the SRO 2000 or something else. Also when I google SRO 2000 i see alot of models so I am not sure exactly which one. Do you have a suggested vendor? I was looking at getting a Royal-Exclusiv Alpha 170 Cone Skimmer but after reading all your post I think I may be over shooting this. is the SRO 2000 your suggestion?

I would say the 3000 external would be a great upgrade. It would probably pull the same nasty gunk out maybe a little more. but with all the fish it would help keep o2 levels up and help maintain ph as well.

I would go SRO 2000 most likely. very slight hum but would handle the volume well. IT works well at about 6 inches of water. If you need to go deeper I would use the vertex in 180. more volume and water flow.
