Skimmer Q&A Thread

My sro xp2000int has been running for 8 days now and still isn't producing good skimate. The exit pipe is not submerged and I've brought the internal level up to the white collar. Small bubbles to the collar and they get larger in the neck. skimate I do get is quite watery, but lower water level doesn't do anything. Also I took an aquaC ev180 w/ eheim 1262 off this system. It was getting very dark skimate, so there is material to remove, esp with vodka dosing. Any suggestions would be appreciated, or does it just take longer to break in?
Thanks

the skimmer wil lake a while to break in. these take longer than some from the mold agent on them. its takes a while to slime up. empty out what watery skimmate you do get. dont put it back in tank.

Hey Mojo, great thread been reading through some of it and you really seem to know your skimmers!

I have a 50g tank right now that is heavily stocked with about 8 fish and mostly sps for corals, the tank has been running sumpless for the 6 months its been up with an HoB skimmer, im finally deciding to add a 29g sump to it and was wondering what skimmer you would recommend for me?

Thank you for your time!

well depends on the sump space and if you ever think of getting bigger.

The swc bkm 150 is a good fit
The $199 WM s150 at salty critter is a good buy
THe BM NAC 6
SRO 1000
Octo xtreme xs 160

Thank you for the quick reply.

Although i coudlnt find anything on a SWC bkm 150, the others looked nice and all around the same price range.

I plan on using a standard 29g tank as the sump, which is 30x12x18 im pretty sure, so i can customize the baffles to fit pretty much any skimmer thats not over 12" wide.

If i ever upgraded i would most likely go way bigger so new stuff would be a must anyway, so id rather buy one that fits this tank size the best.

Also the tank is in my bedroom so noise levels may become important.

With the above info which would you personally go with?

Again thank you for your help!

the swc bmk 150 and BM nac 6 use same pump. so either one of those or the sro 1000. These would be the most quiet

Thank you!

Another one i have been looking at is the SWC 160 cone which also uses the same atman pump, how do you think this skimmer would do on my size tank?

ok mojo what would be a good skimmer for my 75 gallon softie tank(leather, shrooms, zoas and palys). skimmer compartment is 10"x 11.5".

my old euroreef cs5-3 is getting loud on me and pump is very old so wanting to get something new and keep old skimmer for backup.

The vertex in 180 would be another good choice but its a bigger unit too.

My LFS had the Vertex 180 sitting on the shelf, so I went with it. A local club guy has a drilled 20 that I'll use for a new sump. I'm going to try to use my current 15 gal and the 20. We'll see how that works.

Thanks for the advice.

Hey Mojo, I'm back. You have previously recommended an SRO 2000 for my sps tank approximately 120G. Well I had a BM NAC6 fall in my lap while I was saving up for it. Is this skimmer too small for me? Sell it and put he $$$ towards the SRO? thanks again for your input.

Hi Mojo, anyone else who can help...

Has anyone made a wedge pipe for their skimmers?

I want to know how to grind the T so that the pipe can slide in.

I tried using a dremel but it was ugly....and i ended up throwing out the T

How do i do this?? I tried creating a separate thread but got no replies. Thanks

simply tkae your pvc and cut it with a hack saw that will work well anf file the edges. cut it at a 45 deg angle

it will work but it will be a little small later on down the road when it gets fully stock
