Skimmer Q&A Thread

hey mojo I picked up a swc 150 bmk 3 weeks ago so its broken in. but I can get any skimmate other than a yellow tea, light yellow.

I have the water level set at the very top of the neck. It can't keep a foam head even if I set the water level half way up the neck.

I do have a light bio load and feed sparingly. Is it possible I dont have enough organics to pull out of the tank?

any suggestions?

make sure the air is opened up all the way. there is a dial on the air silencer. Then try setting the water level at the base of the transition to the neck. Then give it time. it will get better the longer it runs.

2 things. How deep is the water. I found mine to run best from 6 to 7 inches.

second thing. If you used all dry rock and its all new saltwater it can cause a skimmer to just go crazy for a bit. I would make sure the water level is good and then just give the tank a little time to gain some organics.

About 7.5"

Yeah it's all new saltwater and dry rock. Skimmer is going nuts. I have the wedge pipe wide open and have the drain on the collection cup open so it pours back into the sump

I wouldnt worry. just give it time. it will start to settle down in about a week. then you will start to get some light colored skimmate you will want to throw this away. If you can raise the skimmer another inch just until things settle in it will help too. Some salts have conditioners in them that cause skimmers to go a little crazy. I have had this happen many times with new setups. you will be fine. Trust me here on this one.

Mojo,

My old PM RL150 was just not enough so I just ordered the new RO Extreme SX200. Is there anything good/bad or any tips you can share? It's going an a 90gal w/20long sump.

Thanks!

The new deltec line are really nice products. They have upped the build quality and performance on the new line. I think the skimmer would work fine for your setup. I have only seen these skimmers and have not run one myself. it may be just a tad small if you are heavily stocked. but I think for a medium stocked tank or average you are ok. When I say heavy I mean way too many fish. You people know who you are .... lol.

Mojo,

I'm looking at setting up a 65 gal tank with a 20 long sump. The tank will end up with a heavy bioload and I want a protein skimmer that can handle that. I'm looking around the $300 range (though cheaper or a little more would be fine too.) I've been looking on reef central and the net. My top runner so far is the Reef Octopus Super XP-1000SSS. What is your opinion of this or do you think there is something better I should be looking at? Thank you. :)

Can anyone compare an SRO2000 to a G4+; footprint and wattage are much larger on the ASM, what about noise, maintenance, reliability, performance? I'm assuming the ASM performs a wee bit better being larger and more powerful, but how much more? Which one would you get?

WM s-150 pump

WM s-150 pump

I picked up a new to me skimmer body sans the pump today. Original equipment was "a Modified Sedra 7000". Finding a new Sedra is easy enough, but what of the tricked out version for this skimmer? Or the parts needed, I'll guess the needle wheel and venturi?

Or would you have a suggestion for a different pump?

I didn't see any reference to replacement parts on WM's site.

Suggestions welcome.

Thank you.

that one is pretty good . the new octo xtreme xs 160 would be a good choice too.

They modify them to fit. the sedra 7000 is standard. the 9000 they use actually bores out the output. but the 7000 just uses the wm venturi and pinwheel

140 with a 55 gal sump (fuge in sump).. Fowlr for now. Medium bioload.. First setup since I've been in Florida.

Swc200? Vertex180??

I'm picking up the tank tomorrow and getting the ball rolling.

Let me know what you think and thanks in advance for your guidance.

Ok lets try the SRO 3000 against the G4+, is the ASM worth the ~$60 more per year operating cost?

what skimmer would you recommend for a 25g with a 15-20g sump? i was thinking a BM NAC3+ or NAC3.5. since my tank is a cube and the stand will be a odd shape, i was thinking of a HOB on my sump to make room for a fuge so i was considering a NAC5E on it.

i was planning on 3-4 small fish and a good mix of corals, i dont want my skimmer to limit my stocking. i'd like to spend under $200, that's why i've been looking at the BM series since they seem to be great skimmers for the price

the asm and SRO are in to different leagues. the asm is old school. Move a lot of water and a little air. the sro moves less water but a lot more air. Now when talking the 3000 to the g4. the sro will pull about the same water as the g4 but will pull about 1500 lph of air to the g4's 650 lph of air. The asm is a good ol simple skimmer but its hard to compete with the new pumps that are out now.

I have a 67g reef tank at home with a 20g sump and have Reef octopus extreme 200 with a sicce 2500 pump, well the performance is very very poor maybe oversize by a lot.

Im currently building in my office a 240g reef cube with a 50g sump for softies, rbta and lps with just a few sps, would the octopus extreme 200 work on my new system or would I need a larger skimmer?

I was at first gonna buy a new skimmer for the 240g system but if the octopus extreme would work for the new set up I might get instead a smaller skimmer for my home reef tank.

you will want something that moves more water. Something like a hurricone cat 1, or the sro 3000

How would the SRO 3000 ($399) perform against the XP-3000 ($559)

Are the extra $160 bucks worth it?

THX again

Thanks! Now I'm spinning around again. I used the sro2000 comparison because my feeling is it should compare well to the Bursa. I was set on the Trigger, because of the energy savings over a used G4+ I have available to me; while I'd love saving more than $200 on a skimmer it doesn't take long for a 23w pump to make up ~$80 in electricity use per year. Now I see the sro3000 running at a similar price to the Bursa, and an IN280 was thrown in the mix. I'm getting started on a 150 65/35 sps/mix build, and you can see where my price range is; I'm not afraid to go on a wee bit smaller side as i could always toss my 9005 in to make up some, but there starts going my watts savings right. Foot print is a bit of a concern. Any more Insight? Again thanks.

Another quickie please. I've looked through the vendors listed on WM website, and with very little luck finding a 7000. None of them were being sold with a pinwheel or venturi.

Do you have a suggestion for a replacement pump?
