Skimmer Q&A Thread

Im also interested about that....
Thansk!

Well this is a topic that can go on by itself for ever. its hard to spend the extra $$ when the sro int has a long conical transition already. If it were me...... I would save the extra $$ and get the int model. If you are pushing the limits of the skimmer as far as tank size then the xp cone is a better way to go.

Hello Mojo and skimmer experts!

I'm having the exact same issue that JG1 was with his ATB, but I have an SRO-1000int. Mine is on a brand new 75 gallon with dry pukani rock (had some crusty dead life on it that made the water yellow and stink for a few days) and filled with freshly mixed instant ocean (I haven't added any water conditioners or additives). The skimmer output is above water and gate valve is wide open. I have it in 6.5" of water and it has been constantly overflowing for a little over 2 weeks now with no sign of any reduction in overflowing.

What do you recommend doing to help this maturing process along? Do weekly small water changes that will be part of my normal maintenance routine? Add a hardy fish? Add organics (fish food) to help ensure that the cycle doesn't backtrack? Raise the skimmer (6.5" sounds about right from what I've read, but I could put it on a stand to sit in about 5")?

Thanks very much!

I would raise the skimmer upa little more for now until the skimmer can pull out some of what it is thats causing it to overflow. raise it another inch or so for now.

It looks really nice. kind of curious what it will pull for air. With the stock volute cover on the pump I would think the max air draw would be around 1200 to 1400 lph of air if its a 1500 motor block. But thats still really pretty good. It appears to have a good design but I have not really gotten into the neck cleaners yet. but al in a ll a nice skimmer

Picking a skimmer for my first tank.45g oceanic tech

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone. I just picked up a oceanic 45tech and am trying to decide on a skimmer. Currently I just have the tank and matching stand. Thinking a 20g sump with either a Bubble-Magus NAC7 Cone Shape Skimmer or a Reef Octopus 6 (150 Gallon) In Sump Pinwheel Protein Skimmer w/ Bubble Plate? Thanks much.

That was some solid advice, Mojo! I raised the skimmer and now it is in 5" of water. It is skimming very wet with the gate valve wide open, but it is no longer overflowing. Here is a 12 hour shot:

Thanks very much for your assistance.

yea that is some nasty stuff. My bk mini actually pulled out some grey and balck stuff too when the tank was first set up. I am sure once you get most of the garbage pulled out you will be able to lower the skimmer back down and start pulling out some more brown nasty nog.

Glad it is working for you.

mojo i have a 75g reef tank with a 40g sump moderatly stocked. what would be the best skimmer for under $300. i was looking at the vertex 180 or the swc 160 cone. not really sure. right now i have the aqua-medic turbofloater blue 1000 and the pump went out. thanks

Under $300.... The vertex will move a lot more water than the swc. I think the the octo extreme xs 160 would be a bit better balanced to your system. With a better pump than the swc 160. That is probably to route I would look. The new sicce syncra pump is really pretty nice. I think the IN 180 will be just a tad too big long term. the in 180 is best fit from 90 to 125 gal heavy stocked tanks in my opinion. Hope htat is helpful.

i am planning on fully stocking my 75 going full sps with 4-5 fish one being powder brown tang. would the octo still be a good choice or would the vertex be better in this case. thanks

Almost the same set up and I went with a NAC7. Could you please tell me why that is not on your list so I know what to look for if I when I get another one. I must say it seems to be working great.

the nac 7 is a good unit too. the uild of the octo xs is a little better and the syncra pump is a little better than the atman 2500. We are not talking huge differences but when you are at the same price point. The nac 7, swc 160 and swc 150 bmk are all using the same pump. The swc skimmers are the same as AE but you pay about 50% more for the SWC though.

Mojo, which octopus skimmer do you refer to being the best one for under 100g systems

The Reef Octopus Extreme 160 (black skimmer $289.95, sicce ps2500 )

or

The Reef Octopus Etreme SX 160 (red skimmer $284.95, sicce psk-600)

The extreme xs 160 or 200. The new sicce pumps are better pumps with less hassle.

Hey Mojo,

I took your advise and went with the Reef Octopus Extreme XS 160. It is a great design and very easy to set-up. It was pulling pretty nasty stuff by the second day. I am very pleased with this skimmer after the first week.

Thanks again.

the newer extreme is a better design and pump. the older model the sicce 2500 was way to much pump for the body and had re-start issue's. the newer model is better balanced with a better pump on it
