Skimmer Q&A Thread

im reaching out to whoever is reading this to help me.

i have a Eshopps Hang-On Protein Skimmer PSK-75H that has not been working correctly for the last few days. I have tried soaking it in vinegar, warm water, etc. When putting it back together i believe i found the problem just dont know how to fix it. If i turn it one while leaving the water intake tube not connected to the impeller it seems to make the start of bubbles (big bubbles not the small usual mirco bubbles) but when i connect the water intake tube it does not do anything. It makes a sound like the impeller can not pull the water through almost like its struggling.

has anyone had this type of issue

Ok, right now I have a new Deltec APH525 that I will be running on about 70 gallons of water on a heavy stocked SPS system. I was wondering if this is a good fit or if I should look into something else? I'm open to anything really as I'm designing a custom sump around the skimmer so I never want to have to change it. It needs to be quiet, eficient, and no micro-bubbles. Thanks for the help!
 
i have a 150g with about a 40 gallon sump and i would like to have a med-heavy bio load and some sps but mostly lps is there a skimmer that can handle this in the 300-350 price range?
 
dustin it should be more then sufficient, maybe towards the max end of it pending how heavily stocked you go.

kels vertex in180 would be close most skimmers that are in the range for you are over that price, look into the used forum would do a little more for you

the deltec will work great Just be sure to use a separate feed pump. they work better with a separate feed pump than running off your drain line
 
Thanks mojo I went ahead and got the SWC 250a. I couldn't be happier. I now know why people are always saying the askoll 1500 is powerful and silent. It's definatly both. Any idea where to get an extended neck for one. SWC doesn't sell'em anymore?
 
Mojo, thanks for recommending the Vertex. The Gen. 3 upgrades make this skimmer much better than my previous Gen. 2. I'm so glad I went with this skimmer especially for the price.
 
NAC6 vs SWC 160 vs SRO 1000XP-SSS

I currently have a BM NAC6 runnning on a 57 gallon Illuminata, I was running it on a 40 gallon ADA. My sump is small and can only accommodate a skimmer with dimensions close to the BM. Do you think it would be worth it to get the SWC 160 or the SRO 1000-SSS or is there a better skimmer out there that size?

Thanks for your help. I'm just trying to figure out if this is the BEST skimmer I can get for this setup. I need to know if the Deltec will just work well or if it is the best I can get. I want to set it up from the start perfectly and my sump will be built around it and this skimmer has a bit larger footprint than some others so if something else is better and saves size, that's even better!!! If you could choose 3 skimmers from 1st to 3rd for 75 gallons heavily stocked with fish and SPS, what would you choose? In this scenario, money doesn't matter...

I actually posted this in the eshopps forum, but I just found this one! Seems like you could point me in the right direction.

Need some advice on a skimmer. In particular the eshopps s-150. Right now I have a 125 gallon tank and a sump with no skimmer. The guy who was taking care of my tank is out of the picture now and I'm realizing I need a skimmer amongst other things (like salt and changing my water). I was recommended an eshopps s-150. It looks good from different reviews. Would it be able to handle a 125 gallon in a 30 gallon sump? I have 3 tangs, 2 clowns, mystery wrasse, bluespot jawfish, anthias and 6 chromis and a bunch of shrimp and hermits. Corals are all soft but want to get into it more. I have 2 eheim 1260 return pumps and I really have no idea how a skimmer is even set up. Does the outflow of the "cleaned" water from a skimmer go right back into the sump and the 2 pumps that I have in the sump now just pump the water up? Or do I have to pump the water up some other way? I'd like to utilize what I have now. If you can't tell...I'm a big time newbie. I have only sat back and enjoyed my tank until now. I am looking forward to learning and maintaining my tank myself. Also...I really am looking forward to more corals and growing them, etc. Thanks



I'm open to whatever you suggest. I really would not like to spend much more than $500..unless you HIGHLY recommend it. Here are pics of my current tank. It's a 4' x 2' x 2' and the sump is 36" x 17" x 13" wide. I have head room. I will also be adding more live rock soon FYI.

Both pipes are now moved directly over sump at right end w/ a sock over it.

for your size tank just run the nac6. You are splitting hairs. The swc 160 uses the same exact pump as the nac6 u are using.

what you have looks fine. as long as you have the ATO then put the skimmer in the section where your return pumps are. For 8 inch water depth. and to keep the price down. Take a look at the Vertex in 180 gen 3 or the octo extreme xs 200. Both will work well and will work well at 8 inches. Prices are about $300 ea. make sure if you get the octo you get teh xs model it has a better pump than the older version.

That brand no. But the skimmer is about the same design as the Bermuda skimmer line.

Huge pump to run the injector. only suggest it if your power is cheap and you have a really tight space for a large tank.
