Skimmer Q&A Thread

ThefishMan65 thanks for remind me I will upgrade to 220gal and skimmer is the only thing that I am going to use for equipment.

Hey mojo, what do you think would be a better match on an Alpha200, a BB Hy3000 or a BB HY5000 skimmer pump? Looking for an alternative for whenever this RD goes out or needs new parts. Not going to spend that kind of money on parts if out of warrenty.

Hi, I have a 215g tank with a 60g sump. This is a new setup with saltwater and sand only. Live rock is coming in about 2 weeks. I need a skimmer that I can install in the sump or hang-on the sump. I have a 34" height in the sump. I want anyone to recommend a good skimmer that is easy to setup, dial-in, run, etc. It has to be forgiving as far as water level, etc. I've been looking at tons of skimmers, but can't decide what to get. I've never used a skimmer before, so any help is very appreciated. Thanks,

I have a 90g tank and 20g sump with a heavy-ish bioload and mostly softies with a few lps. I currently have no skimmer on the tank and have a spare Precision Marine RL 150 laying around. Is this going to be a big enough skimmer for my system?

Hello all, i will be looking to get a skimmer for my in wall 120 display and looking for your opinion on skimmer ratings. My total system will be around 300G 120 display 100g stock tank 50g refugium 60g frag and thinking bout adding a small (30-40g)soft coral tank in fishroom for fun.

Ive heard different opinions on sizing your skimmer to system/ display/ bioload. The sizing to display and system is self explaining, however the size to your bio load is a very broad statement.

With display im looking at haveing very heavy SPS/LPS with 2-3 tang and many smaller fish ( heavy load) Frag tank will eventualy be very full and i plan on having couple sm. fish in it. And Sm softy tank in fishroom will have some fish and pack with coral too.

I was looking at Precision Marine bullet 3 ( rated at 300G) but got some negative feed back saying it was too big and i should size skimmer to display tank (120G) although with frag and softy tank id be at about 220G.

Also was looking at some royal exclusiv Vertex skimmers and they rate from 40-100/200G. Which makes me wonder why they can have a such a spread on sizing and others dont/ cant.

Im not looking for a get this not that reply here just your views on sizing skimmer correctly.

OK mojo i have determined that high end skimmer ratings are accurate, and low end ones can be... skewed.

I also have generaly wanted to set the tone for my build as do it right the first time.

So i have decieded on going with a royal exlusiv brand skimmer, and want your recomendation.

Im between : BK Deluxe 200 $1600

------------- BK Supermarin 200 $1400
------------- Alpha cone 250 $1200

My gereral thoughts are Deluxe would be the best Right... and y not spend 200 more compared to supermarin. I hope to upgrade display in 5-8 yrs probably to a 240 display and i dont think the alpha would cut it for that.

What are the major differences between the 3 and what do you recomend.

I have an Aqueon ProFlex Model 3 sump. I got this because I had an external skimmer (EuroReef RC 180). It has had a leak I have not been able to stop, had to replace the impeller, and it is too loud. Now, I am stuck with having to find a skimmer that fits this space. I am at a max footprint of 13"x8". However, that leaves me with a return pump issue if I consume all that space. I am looking at the following and hoping to get a recommendation for one of these or another. I need to stay around $300.

This list is strictly created from a footprint sizing:
AquaC EV 120
Super Reef Octopus XP1000ss
Bubble Magus BM-NAC7
Reef Octopus XS160
SWC Xtreme 160

Hey mojo

Would a SRO 5000 work for a 300g mixed reef, stocked with a medium bio load? I'm looking for recommendations as I'm upgrading tanks soon. Also would should I go cone or not?

Other options? Dont feel like spending 2K on a skimmer but want one that works. I've also been looking at the SWC 300 with the askoll pump.

Thoughts? Thanks again.

Probably the 3000 Ithink the 5000 is a great pump but it might move too much water and then you wll have micro bubbles.

The supermarin 200 is the way to go. I think it will perform better than the deluxe 200 actually at a lower price. The Supermarin skimmers are one the best designs you can buy.

well al will need a stable water level

with that said, the Aquamaxx 250 is the smallest I would run on it.

The sro 3000 model would be great, the octo extreme 250 xs would also be a good choice.

Not sure of tank load size ect.. but the Reef octo XS 160 would be the way to go with what I know.

The sro 5000 would be a great fit. I would get the internal model as it already has a long conical transition to the neck. Save the extra money a cone would cost. I think you will enjoy it.

Mojo~

Thx Mojo. It is a new setup 8 weeks. It is a 90g standard tank. There are only 2 chromis right now and 2 clowns in QT going in about 1 week to the tank. I will only have about 7-9 fish. I want to have an anemone for the clowns and corals.
