Skimmer Q&A Thread

are you talking the nw 200? the basic octo skimmer line. The 200 would be fine for a fish only tank. it moves a lot of water. not alot of air but it would do a good fine for a fish only tank.

Thank you again for all your help. I think this is my last question for now

You gave me advice a page ago about getting a eheim 1260 or 1262 to replace my sicce 2500's in an octopus extreme 250. I cannot take the startup issues and directional problem, since I auto feed 4 times a day shutting down the pump and skimmer.

Do you mean replace the 2x 2500 with 2 of eheim pumps or with one?

I am really looking to max out the skimmer while minizizing electrictity.

From what I have read (this whole post and more).. you prefer the simplicity of one pump.

If none of the above would work as a single pump what about a bubble blaster?

What is the largest bubble blaster you would put on this skimmer?

Thank you for your help.

Mike

I think I said Tunze pumps. those would be two pumps. if you replace with one I would go with one askol 1500 or a bb 5000 pump

was thinking about a RO extreme 160 then I came across a SKIMZ 161 that seems to be getting good reviews. I do need something compact (under 23 inches tall). What do you all think is the best in the 300~ range.

the 161 would be a really nice skimmer. I actually just ordered the skimz sk 201 for my 125. same thing but the kone version. Thought I would give one a shot. Ordered mine from aquacave and used the reef central 5% discount. RC5

i am reviewing the sm202 recirc right now, and i can say the build on these will rival any other brand out there, the pumps are solid, performance is killer, and love that you can adjust the air intake to dial the skimmer in even more, like it so much i went ahead and sold my favorite skimmer ive had out of last 20 or so skimmers

Awesome thread Mojo. I have 150 mixed reef, med-heavy load. My skimmer chamber is small, 11.5" x 10.5" with a 10" water level. I'm looking at these:
Reef Octopus XS160
Bubble Magus NAC8
Bubbble Magus BM180A
I know these are under sized, but space is an issue. What do you think? Any other suggestions. I have around a $300 budget. Thanks.

Trigger Systems Bursa?

Trigger Systems Bursa?

Anybody other than mysterybox used one of these? He gave me some great feedback on it but was looking for some more input. Thanks.

mojo, i have a skimmer way to small on my tank, im buying a used geo from a friend of mine and was told i want to use the same feed pump to feed the geo that i use on my euro reef. the euro reef is rated for about 120gallons and the geo is coming from a 600 gallon total volume systme. the feed pump is a maxi jet1200. my tank is a 220

The Nac 8 would be my choice from those The aquamax am 250 would be a great choice moves a tone more water and will fall to being in budget.

what about comparing with Deltec MCE600? which performance is better?

the deltec is nice but performance wise the mce will hande a little larger tank but they will both work well. The mce600 is a bit overpriced IMO but all in all a good unit as well.

the skimmers are built well but the downside is the psk 2500 has a rotational volute. Other than that they appear to be well balanced units. I have not run one personally. Trigger does make some nice stuff though.

you want to run a feed pump rated 2 to 2.5 times your display volume. a maxi 1200 would be too small. a mag 5 would be what you would need more realistically. depends on the skimmer though too.

The bb2000 is too big. The in 100 body is great and needs about 600 to 700 lph of air. the Tunze hydrofoamer 9410 is really the best choice.

mojo,

Thanks. If the stock pump is working ok, is it worth it to upgrade to the tunze? Will there be better production?

Looking for a new skimmer and I'm kinda confused. I need to have an external skimmer for 100 gallons but my sump is 14" tall. Most that I am finding seem to have a low output tube and I thought you couldn't have the output go up (reading the aqua c directions show that it must go straight in or it will overflow the internal body of the skimmer). How does it work or what should I get?
