Skimmer Q&A Thread

Hey guys, looking for a suggestion. I have a 180 with a 55 gallon sump. I'm open to internal or external. Efficient pump not a concern. Want something that will easily handle a heavy bioload for a budget of up to $600 ish. I have a Bermuda 8 on another system that I run and I love that thing. Too bad Bermuda aquatics isn't making them anymore. Oh, and low maintenance is a must!

Thanks!

SRO 3000 int, Aquamaxx am250, hurricone cat 1 are all great choices.

Another question - what is the difference among the following models of in-sump Reef Octopus skimmers: Reef Octopus Extreme 200, SRO XP 2000, Reef Octopus Super SRO 2000, and Reef Octopus Extreme SX? They range from $315-400 and have slightly different tank size ratings.

have you looked at teh pictures and specs ? basic reef octo line is pretty blah. they are ok but the next ones up are much better.reef octo extreme uses the psk 2500 pump the sro uses the bb 2000 pump and the xs uses the sicce psk 1000.

they pull different amounts of air and water. I would stick with the SRO or the xs series.

Mojo, i really have you recieved your skimz yet, i look forward to the review. I had been recomended to get one over about anything. Was told there performance should come close to matching BK with a much lower price tag. My main concern is, i think its made oversea's and i would think customer support would be lacking, maybe not tho so...

Correct me if im wrong but dont BK's have a rediculous long warranty on parts.

I was looking into the supermarin 200 but if the performance is near the 201 skimz i may change my mind.

The skimz is a good skimmer but the pump on the SK 201 is loud in my opinion. The SM201 uses the es 5000 pump and it is a quieter pump.

The warranty isnt all that great on the bk's really about the same as everyone else. ATB has the best customer service from my experience.

is the sm201 a better skimmer than the sk 201. noise isnt really an issue i have a fishroom isolating all the equipment.

not really better just different. The sk 201 is nice and works well. As does the SM 201. one cylinder with bigger pump and the sk is the cone version with a slightly smaller pump.

I am looking for a new skimmer and was recommended the swc mini hot protein skimmer, its the hob one. I have a 30G setup, mixed reef, was wondering if i could get some input on this particular skimmer, found a nice thread on the forums but it was from 09. Thank you.

Mojo, i am think about getting a new skimmer. Right now i'm using the BM NAC6a on a 130g(total water) with 15 fish( foxface, tang, 5 clownfish, 6 wrasses, firefish, Lyretail Anthias)and with mostly SPS corals.
Would the Reef Octopus Extreme SX 200 Protein Skimmer or a SRO 2000INT be better for my reef tank?

yes with that load I would go withe the sx 200 or the 2000 xp if you like the octos.

Hey mojo, awesome thread by the way.

I appologize if youve answered this question but i couldnt scroll thru 126 pages to find out.

I have a 20G soon to be reef cycling now and im in the market for a skimmer. Problem is I cant decide on a model. Then when I do people always have something negative to say about it. Can you suggest a skimmer for me please?

I wouldnt use one really I would do water changes and call it good. that is the best bet.

well for 20g you can do more by just doing a 5 g a week water change. I would run carbon and gfo. A little carbon and water changes will go a long way on a 20g.

Thank you. I went with the SRO XP 2000 Int.

Looking for a skimmer for my currently cycling 75g with about 80lbs of live rock, and a 29g sump. I'm probably going to stick to mostly LPS. I was considering the Reef Octopus NWB 110, but I can also get a used SWC Extreme 160 for about the same price. What do you think? Or is there anything else I should consider at about the same price range, ie $200 or so.

Super Reef Octopus XP-1000S Cone HOB Skimmer

Super Reef Octopus XP-1000S Cone HOB Skimmer

Anyone out there own one of these? Looking for feedback on performance.

Thanks!
