Skimmer Q&A Thread

I have thought about the sk 181 or sm 121 for my 50g cube. The sm 201 was pretty good. We will see what I do here soon.

how heavy stocked is the tank ? i also had the in100 with a atb mini airstar pump that produce almost twice as much with the in100 as the factory pump did, probably one of the most well balanced skimmers i have owned when i putthe atb pump on it { sicce with custom volute } that body can easily handle 600-700 lpm

Pretty heavily stocked fish wise.

Where would I be able to pick up a mini airstar?

reefspecialty carryies the new airstar. and its not lpm its lph.... :)

I agree the stock pump on the in 100 is a little under powered. good skimmer and could be great if it had about 600 to 700 lph of air intake. I have worked with that pump and it just doesnt have it in it.

wow, amazing thread!

Looking for some assistance - I have a 120 with about 50 gallons of frag tanks and a 40 gallon sump half full. bio-load is pretty low, though I hope to start stocking fish now that I'm feeling good with corals. I'd like to move to a 180, though I'm not sure this is going to happen anytime soon.

I've been eying the SRO-XP3000E external. any thoughts? should I be looking at some other skimmers?

thanks!

Is the 3000 cone a good choice? should I go 5000? any others I should be looking at? Vertex Alpha keeps coming up....

thanks!

Can keep the skimmer at the same water level as now (7")?

shouldnt really be a issue, i ran mine at 8" and as mojo said that body has a under rated pump from factory, 600-700 lph makes it into a little beast

on another note, is there such a thing as over-skimming?
yes there is, basically what happens when running a skimmer to large for your system the skimmer will run inconsistant and not have a constant foam production

Well I just got my mini airstar. What's the best way to connect this to the IN-100?

The vertex pump kind of wedges into the skimmer body.....I don't think i can do that with the airstar

The 300 is the way to go. It will work with what you have and the 180 upgrade later.

probably have to make a fitting and maybe use a small hose to connect it to the body. just like the airstar attaches to the ATB body.

Ready to roll!
