Skimmer Q&A Thread

hmmmm cause i do believe the psk 600 is the comparable to the older 2500, really curious as to which pump it definately is, the psk 1000 might be a little too much for the body, love to see it once dialed in and in action

ughhh. I'm hoping I didn't make a mistake with this pump. Skimmer cannot form a foam head...the bubbles are very turbulent in the neck of the skimmer.

No, the wedge pipe is about 3/4 closed. I had to close it to bring the water level up in the skimmer. I set the top of the bubbles right at the bottom the collection cup.

you will be fine. Open the wedgepipe up. Let it run for about a day or so. The pump has to slime up. then slowly start to close the pipe to bring the water level back up. This pump pulls more than the old one. The settings will not be the same. So I would imagine the water level will be about an inch below the black ring before the transition. Just be patient. if you choke off the air you can get a finer bubble but it pulls more water and will raise the level in the skimmer body. I would just let it sit overnight for sure if not most of the next day. Again just be patient. I have no doubt that it will work out.

Mojo, does the Extreme XS 200 have better performance then the NWB-200?
Marine depot has both of them on sale. NWB-200 for $224 and Extreme XS 200 for $276.24.

Mojo,

Thanks, will do! The black ring before the transition.....are you referring to the bottom of the collection cup? Or the ring where the skimmer body and neck connect together?

I'll give it a few days and see what happens.

ring where the collection cup attaches

xs will have considerably better performance

With this pump I was refering to the right around the top of the body. The water level will still be there . Not where the bubbles are . the bubbles will be up where the collection cup attaches. I have a feeling that once you get the actual water level set to the large black ring that the bubbles will be breaking around the bottom of the collection cup area and it should then start to build a head of foam.

Are you getting any micro bubbles ? Looks to be doing really well. you have to remember that this pump was to be put on a cone with a 8 inches base. But the neck sizes were about the same. So air wise you should be ok. I think you will be fine overall but the in 100 is only 6 inches in diameter so you will have a little faster downward flow than say the atb with this same pump. Shouldnt be too much of an issue. Just curious as I have not run this combo just yet.
its a great pump and the skimmer design is great too. To two together should be really really nice. I think the in 100 is great skimmer. The pump that it comes with needs to pull about 600 to 700 lph not 420 that it is rated at.

More pictures as it breaks in please. There are a lot of vertex owners that might consider the same thing. looks like the pump and stand line up perfectly too.

Thanks

Thats correct.

the nw 200 uses a octo 3000 turbine pump with a pinwheel/needlewheel the xs uses a sicce syncra psk 1000

What does all that mean to you. The nw 200 does pull a good amount of water. This gives it a good rating for larger tanks as it processes a good amount of water. However the pump on the xs may pull a little less water but pull around 800 to 900 lph of air. About double what the stock nw pulls on the 200. Now you can mod out the nw 200 pump and get more performance out of it but it does take some work and it will void the warranty on the pump.

XS 200 is a better option for sure.

Soon as I set the bubbles to brake right where the skimmer starts to cone in below the black ring, the skimmer formed a VERY nice foam head IMMEDIATELY.

There are some microbubbles exiting the skimmer as of now. Maybe the will cease as the skimmer brakes in? I notice them exiting the skimmer....not huge amounts...but I don't see them in the tank itself.

yea that looks much better. And yea give it some time to break in and let your skimmer slime back up. if its just a few bubbles I am sure they will subside over the next week or two. Looks good. The trigger sump looks nice too.
Thanks for posting. I am sure that helps a lot of folks out.

Have gunk already collecting in the riser tube....and I just set it correctly 10 minutes ago. And that was about 20 minutes after I fed the tank frozen food which usually kills the foam head.

I'll update some more. So far with it adjusted correctly, it seems like a monster little skimmer

Looking at a future project, what do you think would be a better skimmer?

IN 100 $200
Aquamaxx PSK 600 $110
Total $310

SRO 1000 (not XP1000)
$275

Well I hope I was able to help. Nice to know after you spend your hard earned money it really does do what you wanted it too. I think you will much happier with this skimmer now.

Oh def. Both you and NyReefNoob have helped a lot.

And to think I went to bed last night thinking I blew $180 and was going to have to stick the old pump back on today. LOL!

Hi Scott,

They would both work well , The modded in 100 will probably handle a little heavier load than the sro 1000, As the pump will pull just a little more air and water. Plus the body will give you a little more reaction time. Both are great units really. I am thinking of buying a IN 100 for my cube. Putting the stock pump on a old euro reef 5-3 I have sitting here for a backup and doing the same thing. Getting the psk 600 from marine depot. I did this once and never hooked up the new pump. Just had too many things going on and sold it before I was able to make it all happen.

I have a skimmer I bought off ebay showing up today. It looks like a nac 7 knockoff. I bought it to play around with until I figure out the rest.

The psk 600 is good but if you could find a used tunze 9410 hydrofoamer it would be great too. Pretty much same thing. different venturi and cool under water silencer.... :)

Yea reefnoob seems to hop on here and pick up the slack for me when life gets busy. Thanks for that. Lots of great people in the hobby. Its nice to get a couple people active too as it is another set of life experiences to pull from.
