Skimmer Q&A Thread

mojo what do you think about a bubbleblaster 2000 pump on a asm g3 skimmer.jeremy at premium aquatics thinks it would be a good match

yeap I agree with Jeremy. The 2000 would be a good fit. The bb 2000 is a heck of a pump. 40 + scfh. Mine pulled about 44.

Should work like a champ.

Hi mojo, I'm in the search for a new skimmer for my 225G (250gallons total). Tank is primarly FOWLR minus a few corals and a carpet anenome. I want to step up to a medium to heavy bio load but I need a better skimmer first. I am running ASM G3 (undersized I know) but I am considering dropping the coin for a BKing.

Is the B.K.s worth the $$ they demand? Maybe other options that would suffice as there are many capable skimmers out there? I'd prefer a dry skimmer (outside of sump) and have 30" of height to play with and noise is a factor as well.

Thanks for any help and suggestions

Hey mojo,

Your thead is awesome. I have a 20G thats been running for about 2 months now and I think im ready for a skimmer.. If you were to choose would you get the AcuaC W/ Maxijet 1200 or The reef octopus HOB BH100? This is a reef in progress and if you recomend a different skimmer Id def. look into it.

Thanks in advance
Jim

The bks are nice for sure. No one will argue that fact. There are some others that are right there as well. I good alternative with the same pump is the atb 1050A. It would probably be my top choice.

I would also consider the Sro 5000 But The BK sm 200 or ATB 1050 would be at the top of the list. Just Atb will offer you much better service if you ever need it.

Mojo could i get your opinion on this.

Also a few post back was a question about skimming and vodka/ carbon doseing.

What affects does carbon doseing have on skimming?

The sro is ozone safe as much as any other skimmer really. Ozone is really hard on all the parts of the skimmer. All the acrylic and seals in the pump ect....

As far as carbon dosing I have yet to see or hear of any cons of carbon dosing on a skimmer . I hope that answered your question.

Both will work pretty well for you. They work totally different.

The aquaC is spray injection and the octo is a pinwheel. There is no doubt that many people have had great luck with both of them. I would probably go with the aquaC the more I think about it as if somthing goes wrong the pump you can get it anywhere. Its made in the USA and built a little better than the octo.

Hope that helps.

Mojo~

Well most like around 5x to 10x flow though the sump Usually aim for about y0x before head loss on a standard tank stand. So if you have a mag 7 and it runs about 500 after that leaves you about 7.5x flow through the sump. Hope that helps ...

The 1000 is a really good fit for your tank now but with the heavy vodka dosing you will have to watch it. If it gets really heavily stocked you may have to bump up to the 2000 int. But I would think if its pulling well I would just stay with it.

No I didn't mean what vodka will do to the skimmer its self.

Here u say to watch it with heavy vodka doseing he will have to watch it.

And on the ozone would it be better to use a ozone reactor to save the stress on the skimmer?

What affects does carbon doseing have on skimming?
it helps to bind nutrients ect and making the skimmer more efficient on removing them

Guys, this mini airstar driven IN-100 absolutely KICKS ***!!!

WOW!

Funny thing is, I had an ATB 840 v2 with the same pump that didn't skim that great (for me). That pump on this skimmer body, it's a monster for me. Go figure.

ATB 840 v2 or Octopus Pro 250E

ATB 840 v2 or Octopus Pro 250E

Mojo,

Which would you choose for a 180 gal reef system moderately to heavily stocked with fish. The Octopus is new old stock with Skim-Rite 900 pump. Also, probably does not have new style volute.

Thanks.
Frank

Not surprised. IMO and IME, the whole cone thing is overrated. You lose a lot of body volume in the cone skimmers. I think the traditional large body, long neck design is still very good.

Any thoughts on waste containers & cleaning heads? My new sro 3000 ext wi be here next week and I would like to use and external waste container.

Thanks!
