Skimmer Q&A Thread

What is the quietest skimmer out there? I have a bubble magus NAC6 right now and it is the loudest thing on my tank. I thought it was supposed to be a quite skimmer.

is this for your euroreef 5-2 ? The ecoplus pumps (aquacave) are the same as the sedras wich the resun king pumps are just sedra knockoffs like the sedra 3500 is the same as the eco 633

It's for a noname skimmer that came with my cadlights 34 gallon signature series.I may just go for a nano reef systems skimmer.Mojo thank you for the quick reply and all the info in this thread,it's priceless

MOJO, what do you think about the Reef Octopus Extreme 350 Protein Skimmer? I have a 300 gallon tank with 90 gallon sump. I was also think about the SWC 300 Cone Protein Skimmer.

the quietest is the bk mini series followed by the newer sicce syncra pumps on the ATB skimmer. They are really quiet as well.

The 350 is a beast for sure. But make sure you get the newer one. The XS series. The pumps are much better. Also they are not too expensive to replace either. You can get them from marine depot and a couple other places pretty reasonable. So the one you would want would be here..

Thanks a lot for the reply. What do you think about the Octopus Super Reef Model SRO - 5000INT with the Bubble Blaster HY5000 pump?

the jns sk2 is 389 but is 5% off and would be both quiet and a great performer. The Bubble magus Nac 7, The Sro 2000 int and the reef octo XS 160 would all be a great fit. The octo XS uses the newer sicce pump and its pretty quiet and the 160XS rolls in at $299. Make sure you get the XS series as it comes with the better pump compared to the older xtreme series

Thanks for the suggestions Mojo! I've been having trouble finding info on the JNS SK2. Is this a reliable brand? What I've seen seems to indicate that they are using the new Sicce Syncra pumps. Is this true? If so, it should be very quiet then, correct? Also, I saw one site had these rated for up to 385gal. Is this going to be extreme overkill for only about 100gal system volume?

Thanks for all your help!

The JNS brand is actually the company who Made Warner Marine skimmers. The build quality is great and the pumps are pretty quiet. Socaltropical premium and a couple others have them

and you cannot go by manufacture ratings. even the high end brands give skewed ratings.

Very good skimmer. IT will have a hum to the pump but they work very well

Thanks a lot, one more question and I won't bother you anymore LOL...which one should I get...

Octopus Super Reef Model SRO - 5000INT with the Bubble Blaster HY5000 pump or the Reef Octopus Extreme 350 Protein Skimmer XS series? There is only about a $100 difference between the two.

I need some advice. I have a 46g bow front with a 10 gal sump fuge combo. Currently running a Bermuda aquatics bps3c. Due to size constraints of my cabinet innate to plumb the skimmer external somit sits up on a platform behind the tank. I ran the skimmer with a mag 7 and it worked so-so. First it skimmed wet and would occasionally overflow and drain my sump a bit. I was able to adjust it to skim drier, but I could never get it to skim dry and consistently. So I did some research and figured out that at the height my skimmer sat, the mg 7 was operating with too much headloss so I found a like new mg 9.5 for 40.00 so I got it today. I don't think thisnpumpmwas used t all! Thanks eBay! Anyway, I have it running with no flow restriction and it's working but it's causing the skimmer tom flush and fill, quite noisly too. I donuts know if the skimmer is just too big, I have it setup poorly or if it's just not a great skimmer. My tank is far from overstocked which is why I got such a big skimmer. I have 6 fish 6 shrimp 3 crabs snails and 9-10 lps, 3 sps frags, 3 acan frags, .
The plumbing is 1" spa flex and is downward, not sideways.
Is there a better external skimmer fornthisnsize system. I figure something that can skim a 100-120 g well stocked is what I really need.

pic of yours jscarlata ? not quite sure how you have it set up and it is a downdraft style or bexket style so there is going to be some noise

Tunze has a new pump out for protein skimmers , 9440 it is like having two 9420.04 pumps made into one.And the cost is not to bad.

Thanks, i'll post a pic tonight, dont have anything handy right now. It simply sits up on a pedastal behind my stand, with the base of the skimmer about 10" off the floor. the return runs over my fuge and down into the sump thru a filter sock. The pump itself is dead silent, i only hear it when it starts up or the sump runs low. the gurgling or flushing is coming from the return line overflow. on the skimmer output there is a T, the top of the T is open and is used for an overlfow, i hear it gurgling and draining from here, the air inlet noise is marginal. I think maybe the 9.5 is a little too much, im going to get a 3/4" ball or gatevalve tonight and see if throttling it back a little helps.
