Skimmer Q&A Thread

just purchased an elos system 70 and have a custom sump (about 20g, tank is 55). going sps dominate. 2 clown fish, mystery wrasse, and a few gobies here and there. i have a 8"x11" area in my sump which can be modified to make the 8" to 13". would rather not.

which skimmer would you recemmend? $300 budget.

well the skimz 121 will work well, but I would wait as there may be a pinwheel update. The tunze 9006, Vertex in 100 gen 3, sro 1000 are what come to mind right away. Something with a smaller neck around 2.5 to max 3inch and around 400 to 500 lph of air is what will work really well.

I have a 90 gallon tank that I am wanting to get a new skimmer for. I have a light fish bioload, but I feed heavily.

What would you recommend with a budget of $500 or less?

I have been considering the following:
SKIMZ SM 121 MONZTER E SERIES
SKIMZ SM 161 MONZTER E SERIES
SKIMZ SK 181 KONE E SERIES

But I am open to other ideas ( WM, etc.)

Thanks mojo. I pretty much figured that the bk skimmers and the ATB were gonna be my best bets. A buddy of mine said am250 aquamaxx was a beast for under 400$. It's crazy the 200s is so inadequate. Thanks again.

I'm looking for a HOB skimmer on a 75G that I am putting together. A sump is not an option at this time. It's possible that in a year or so, I may upgrade to a 120G, so I'm looking for a skimmer that would allow me to grow and still handle whatever (reasonable) bio-load I throw at it. If I were to go with a Super Reef Octopus LX 2000S, would this be too much skimmer for the 75G? I'm not certain what will be in the tank, so I want to leave myself options moving forward.

The sk 181 would work well. Also the sro 2000 would work too. The sskimz its built a little better but wait for the new pinwheel design.

I know you are busy but could you recommend a skimmer for about 160 gallons total volume. I think you missed my earlier post. I wanted your feedback on the trigger protein skimmers. On paper it looks good and energy + money wise not bad. What would you suggest.

The triggers are built nice but use the old psk 2500 pump.

I would look the Sro 2000, AM am250, OCto xs 200.

I would get the smaller one. its a good unit. as well as the aquamaxx h1

if you were going to heavily stock it then the 2000 would probably do ok.
actually the more i think about it. If you are not running a sump at all what filter are you running. A hob filter ? That would be fine. but in that case I may up it to the 2000. good luck lmk what you get. SRO is a good bang for your buck unit no matter what skimmer from there line you get.

hey mojo what do you think of the SWC 230 with the askoll 1500 for a 210DT? I just picked up a SRO 500 int locally but they said I could return it, another local store is selling the SWC 230 for $495

mojo... I may be at a crossroads... I have a ~100g system (85 DT/15 Sump). I'm currently running an ATB 804 v1.5. I'm looking at upgrading the pump to the v2.0 Sicce Syncra, but after seeing the price, I was wondering if I should be considering a new skimmer? Not that I want to spend less... but rather... if I'm going to spend that much, maybe I should see what the latest and greatest in skimmers are...

So... In the same class of skimmers, would you still go with the ATB 804, or is there something better worth considering? I do have a limitation on space... I don't think I could fit anything larger into the space I have... it's pretty tight now.

I have a smaller setup- 40 gallons plus about 10 in the sump. Sump space is somewhat limited. You had recommended the sss-1000. I noticed this has a 3 1/2" neck and rated higher than the sro-1000 you recommended on the tank above.

Do you think I should still go with the sss 1000 on my tank?

I have 45 gallons total water and an available foot print of 9"w x 9"d. My tank is not stocked yet, but I'm thinking about moderate to high bioload.

I also have 135 gallons total water volume and a large open space for a skimmer. Same moderate to high bioload.

I don't have a budget, but I don't want to spends tons of $$ either (unless it is REALLY worth the cost). Can you give me your top three recommendations for each tank? Thank you for your help!

Going to have a mixed reef with SPS. Total water volume 370 gallons with the display being 225 gallons. The tank will at least have a medium bioload. Looking for an in-sump skimmer and space isn't a problem. Curious about your recommendations and if you would put the ATI powercone on the list.

the new pump is nice. Fixes any isssues the psk2500 had. the mini airstar is good but hte new pump is more quiet and works very well.
