Skimmer Q&A Thread

Skimmer article

Skimmer article

I read an article about 1 year ago about limiting the use of your skimmer. Reducing the number of hours a day that it runs so your marine aquarium will have some nutrients to feed life while maintaining a healthy aquarium.
I can't find it.
Can anyone provide a link to it?
Thanks!

I have just spent hours reading through this thread. Tons good info for someone shopping for a new skimmer. Thanks and Great Job Mojo!!!

Before I started reading through all of this the Warner Marine MF201 was at the top of my list. It's still a major contender.
If I new for sure I could fit the ATB 840 that would be the one.

The skimmer I have now has a footprint of 14x9" and it pretty tight.
In the pictures you will see that the wedge pipe is on the right. The ATB is on the left, so I think I will have problems with the filter sock holder being in the way.
The 840 may fit if I put the skimmer body in the back corner of the sump with the pump diagonally to the opposite corner of the skimmer section.
What do you think?

It is myth #17 concerning the skimmer.

So my question is, how many hours during the day do you cycle your skimmer off?

Hey Mojo,
You ever get tired of people asking you for help? I hope not. LOL. I searched the thread, but didn't find what I was looking for.

I have a Cardiff Nano that houses 2 seahorses and 1 goby at the moment. The horses are the messiest fish I have ever kept. They are worse than my tangs. If I wanted to keep up with their load, I think I would have to do water changes about 3-4 times per week. The skimmer I am using now is the in stock skimmer. It is the same one that comes with the Solana. It does take a lot out of the tank, but it cannot keep up with my ponies. I would like to put some more corals in the tank in the future. I have 1soft coral in there at the moment and a ton of different Macro Algae. I need a kick butt skimmer. Can you help? Hang on the back would be fine. Your thoughts on the "best" would be greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful day.

I think both are good... However for a small footprint the Sea side aquatics CS2 might be a good choice for you. it has a small foot print but still uses the same pump as a the 840..

It would make life with the filter sock much easier.

the aquamaxx hob, sro 1000 hob ora used deltec hob would all work really well for you.

And thank you. As far as asking questions. My tank is going bye bye tomorrow. I just traded it off and am not sure what I am going to do....Might take a break for a while. So ask your questions now.Might not be around much longer.

Thanks for the advice.
After taking some measurements I think I might just be able to fit ATB 840. It will be close. After all I've read I really want to try the ATB. If I dont I will still always be wanting to try the ATB.
I can always build another sump if it doesn't fit.
Gonna give it some more thought over the weekend then make a decision.

I like the build quality how you can take it all apart, and Victor always has great customer service

The atb is rated for up to 250g according to aquacave and the alpha cone 200 is rated from 75-300g. What makes a difference between these two skimmers if i want to run then in a 100g with a 40g breeder sump? Why would the atb perform better?

Again, thank you so much for the help Mojo!

Wow i started this yesterday and i am up to pg 127 however I figure I will ask my question and then go back and finish reading the rest so here goes

I have a 36x37x18 cubish about 100g volume and a 50g sump with a constant 9.5 inch water level my stand is open because it is in a fish room and it is 40 inches high so i really have no height restrictions my skimmer section footprint is 11x16 so if there are any recommendations i would be happy to hear them btw display is mixed and skewed to a heavy bioload thx in advance

A alpha 200 on a 75 would not work well at all. The alpha has a much larger neck! look at the specs. Not just the gallon ratings. The neck is very large. I would run a 200 on a 180g display. Not a 100g tank. Your tank would have to hold so many more nutrients before it would even start to skim.

The atb 840, Sea side cs2 and the jns sk2 would all work well. as well as the sro 2000. But they will all need a stand to sit on. The seaside cs2 can run abotu hte deepest of them all. IT would be a great fit and might even run without a stand. it will be borderline.

another option would be the AVAST cs1. it can run a tad deeper.
