Skimmer Q&A Thread

just put my new sro xp5000 external online....

3 hours and its already starting to skim.... can't wait to see the results..though a little nervous about the level as it breaks in...

any recommendations on breakin and how to adjust flow to the skimmer for optimal? kind of winging that one...

A alpha 200 on a 75 would not work well at all. The alpha has a much larger neck! look at the specs. Not just the gallon ratings. The neck is very large. I would run a 200 on a 180g display. Not a 100g tank. Your tank would have to hold so many more nutrients before it would even start to skim.

Awesome, thanks Mojo!

Advice for a 210

Advice for a 210

Hey all,
I am upgrading from a 150 gallon to a 210g wall tank. I've been running an ATI BM 200 for the last 5 years on the 150. Been a good skimmer but I am not in love with it. So I would appreciate some advice. Would you run the ati200 on the new tank and add another mid size skimmer to it to run both at once? Or just replace the ati with a new larger skimmer? 210 g plus 75 g sump. Pretty heavy stocking is the plan.

What skimmers are considered strong these days in the 400-500 rAnge or less?

Thanks
Paul

Sad to hear that you're taking some time off Mojo. But happy for you as I'm sure you need it. I've narrowed it down to an ATB 1050A & Alpha 200 or Alpha 250. What do you think? For a 200G bare bottom display.

Looking for a skimmer for a 400g tank, 150 sump, 40-50g frag tank that will be well loaded and SPS dominated (I hope). Doesn't matter if internal or external, height and size don't matter. However am looking for low power consumption and reasonable cost (aka not Bubbleking).

Any suggestions would be great.

mojo I once again need your advice my n-100 broke broke so what would you recommend for under $300 dollars Its a 90 dt 40g sump the sump baffle is 9" I was considering vertex n-180 this time are a octopus ex-160 with one is better out of the two

Hi Mojo, awesome wealth of info. I have a 120gallon. 60X18X25 in need of a skimmer. I'm trying to narrow it down. I've looked at the Warner S150, Octopus 160,ASM G1A,Bubble Magus B180, Bubble Magus NAC 7. I would appreciate your views and any recommendations.

Thanks in advance

I am looking to buy a new skimmer for a 120 with 40 sump I want to buy a reef octopus and was wondering what to get. I think I want a diablo 2500 but im not sure if the extreme 200 would be better?

I'm considering my options for a 90G display plus 30G sump for a mixed reef with medium/high bioload. I'll be running 3-4x tank volume through my sump. Id give noise a slightly higher consideration over performance, though if extremely quiet or silent skimmers won't get the job done then that is something i'd like to know. I'm having a difficult time finding ultra quiet skimmers for my build. The skimmer/sump will need to be in my stand below the DT.

I'm considering the following:
Reef Dynamics INS135E
SRO 1000 Int
BK Mini 160
Tunze 9011
Tunze 9016
Tunze 9410

I'm particularly interested in the Tunze options due to quiet operation, but I don't like the design tbh and i'm unsure about their ability to skim the size tank i'm planning.

Mojo,

Hi! I'm on the fence on a new skimmer for my 120g SPS tank. I have 6 fish total (3 Tangs, 2 Clowns and a Mandarin). I've pretty much narrowed it down to either an ATB 840 V2 or the ATB Elegance 200 Pro. I like the lower footprint of the Elegance, but worry it may be too much skimmer for my tank... Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

Is there a pump that will work in my swc 160 as well as the sicce 2500, its the original swc extreme 160 not the newer cone style. Id like to replace it with something more reliable on startup but not sure if there is another pump that is ideally sized for the application. I know that there is a sweet spot with skimmers as far as air and water flow and dont want to change the performance for the worse.
