Skimmer Q&A Thread

skimz Sm201 - $450 rated up to 214 - 533g

or

JNS Sk3 - $479 rated up to 581g

I figure bioload will be a mix of angels, tangs, smaller fish, wrasses, and other heavy eaters.

180 gallon fowlr w/ 75 g sump, I have been torn between the two I messaged mojo he recommends the JNS, but idk the skimz is pretty!

I've heard that Reef Octopus is similar to older Euro Reef skimmers. I just picked up a used Euro Reef RS100 for a good price. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Mojo,

Any thoughts on a HOB for a 37 FOWLR that could be a softie down the road?

Stocking will eventually be 5 - 7 small fish.

Thank you.

Hello,
Just looking for some advice or tips. Im running a swc230 cone in my 210g display with 75g sump. I'm getting excess micro bubbles. Anyone know ways to reduce them. Maybe raising or lowering the skimmer ...

Mojo,

What would you recommend for a 34g solana that might fit in the back chamber? I'm between the tunze 9002 or the JNS VS1 Hang-On-Back Protein Skimmer. Not sure if you have tried hob skimmers but what would you recommend?

How would an eshopps s150 do on an 80g with 40g sump, and about 12-14 small fish? I was going to go with an sro2000, but found an s150 for $100. I don't need a comparison of the two as i know how that would turn out...just if the s150 could handle the bioload well enough.

Not a swc fan but yes you can change the height. I would try a little deeper first.

the tunze will be better if you want ti to fit inside. the jns is pretty good size and would need to hang off the back of the tank.

you are asking alot of that s150. I wouldnt waste the money on it. The sro 2000 is the way to go. Will it work? yes..... will you have other issues... there is a good chance you will exhaust your carbon quicker leaving your tank dirtier costing you more moeny in the long run.

with that said. if you keep up on water changes the eshopps will be ok. but that is with doing weekly changes.

Mojo,

I asked before on a recommendation for a skimmer on a 183g display with 2x 40gallon breeders for sump/refugium and didnt get a response. Can you point me in a direction please. I would like to try and stay in the 350 and under range.

Thanks

Okay I have a 29 gallon standard tank setup up for a year now with a lot of rock and sand. I have 5 nano sized fish but just getting into corals. I feed heavy and want a heavy bio-load. I will upgrade to a 50 gallon or 75 gallon in a year or two.

For the short term I'm now using a SeaClone 100 (don't laugh). I have an ASM G3 I used on a previous tank that is in waiting for the current tank but now I'm thinking it's overkill. I personally did the gate valve, recirculating, and gravity-feed-from-overflow modifications to the ASM. I'm very pleased with the gravity feed thing and think it works good but this skimmer is rated at 250 gallons.

If the ASM is too big I have two other skimmers I'm looking at:

My Reef Creations MRC-1: I can get one used for a fair price but have heard foam nozzles need frequent maintenance. (Rated at 175 gallons.) What would be a good pump for this skimmer?

Reef Octopus 6 (180 gallon) Recirculating Protein Skimmer:
It's about the same size as my asm but more appropriately rated? (I could modify gravity feed here.)

Hello, thanks for a great thread.

I have a shallow FOWLR tank (20g long - 12" high) and am looking for a HOB skimmer to replace my POS prizm. I have been having a heck of a time trying to figure out the minimum tank depth for various skimmers. Most of them say the actual skimmer height but not the tank depth. Due to my current stand, I cannot have a skimmer that hangs below the height of the tank itself. Height above the tank is not a problem. I am planning to upgrade to a 46g bowfront within a year (20" high) and need a skimmer that would fit on the 20g long now and also handle the 46g later.

I have been looking at the reef octopus bt100 (I believe someone said that hung down 15" - is that the case?) and the aquamaxx HOB, but am open to suggestions on a quality skimmer.

Or if there really is nothing good for such a limited depth, a good skimmer for after the upgrade to the 46g would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Thanks Mojo! How about between both skimmers, which performs better? I noticed that on your signature, you have a nano. Do you run a skimmer? What do you use in your media basket? I was aso thinking of ordering one of these and using filter sponge > purigen > chemipure.

I'm looking for a skimmer for my 72 gallon with a 10 gallon sump. The footprint should be less than 10 x 10 and I'd like to stay under $300 if that's possible.

im looking at a couple skimmers. specifically the atb 840 and seaside aquatics cs8. My question is what allows the atb to be run in shallower sump water than the cs8 ? same pump right ?would the cs 8 be as effective in a sump depth of about 8" even though it is reccommended at 9 to 10" ?

sro 3000 OR sro 5000

sro 3000 OR sro 5000

Mojo:
Thanks for helping everyone here with decisions!

I'm starting a 200 gal display / 40 gal fuge / and 40 gal sump.. Mixed reef, starting with all frags and light load, but plan to max it out with heavy load eventually..
SRO 3000 OR SRO 5000?
Leaning toward a slower sump turnover, something around 5x/hr
I want to go big, but i'm concerned that the 5000 may not get enough organics to work well, which leads to this question: if i did go with a 5000 can it run just at night or just during the day? (timer)??

thanks
