Skimmer Q&A Thread

I just purchased am omega 150 for my new tank that I'm building based on the recommendation of Jeremy at Premium Aquatics. He had nothing but good things to say and he stated that's what he would buy if he was building a tank in "our" size range.

the 6-2 was equivalent in size to the current reef dynamics ins135... hard to compare a skimmer with 600-700plh air vs one with over 2000lph. The 6-2 would be considered undersized for your tank and meant for more for like a 75 to 120 gal tank. Yeah, there would be a big difference. Now, his skimmer vs the sro5000..more comparable and the performance difference is not enough to really make any kind of difference in tank parameters.
as far as why choose something like the vertex alpha 200... some folks appreciate the more precise build quality and if you ever had a chance to see the difference in the askoll pumps vs the bubble blaster, you'd understand the bubble blaster just does not compare in quality of materials or manufacturing. If one makes the $$ and wants to purchase high quality craftsmanship... I say go for it. Also the vertex has a more balanced air to water and as such are less prone to the surging/overflowing that some folks experience with the sro.. the outputs are better designed so air pockets cannot form in it. The pump and skimmer... silent to the point if you closed your eyes you might not be able to tell if it is even running.

you are so right about the 6-2 being undersized, when I started the tank I had the Euroreef laying around and had other things to buy, so I thought upgrading the skimmer was my last priority. I used a filter sock and did weekly 20% WCs to help out with the undersized skimmer and I was still lucky to have the nitrates lower than 40ppm at any time, but it averaged around 80. I was torn between the SRO 5000 and the Reef Dynamics INS300

Tunze 9410 - Vertex Omega 150 - SRO 2000INT - Avast CS1 - SSA CS2

125'ish gallons total water volume, 100'ish pounds of rock, SPS focused/high flow, and a medium fish load of (Powder Blue Tang, Foxface, 2x Percula, Small Wrasse, 2x Goby, and a Genicanthus Angel -or- a small harem of Anthias)

Which one, and why?

get the vertex omega 150. second choice SSA cs8(cs2). The vertex has an external pump... less backpressure on the pump so water level is not needed to be set as deep, and this also allows the pump to perform better and take full advantage of the body for better contact time. Should offer better skimming. Also, knowing vertex build quality with their current line of skimmers, I would say the vertex should be the better built skimmer from a quality perspective.

Yeah, it sometimes is hard to say to someone that has a higher nitrate value: you need a more powerful skimmer.
20% weekly on a 180...yikes that is one huge, weekly, water change.

Thanks for your input, I was leaning towards the Vertex a bit myself... I haven't been successful in finding the water level needed for the Omega. any insight?

Instead of making my own thread, let me ask here:

I have upgraded my old Euroreef to a Reef Mania((unsure precise model, 8" body, Sedra 9000 recirc, MJ1200 feed(should be a 900 feed tho)) a couple months ago. It is pulling a good amount of sludge from my system(6mos old 120 mixed reef, and 7 fish) I have been tweaking the gate valve for some time, and not sure how to tell if I am appropriatly dialed in or not. This is the largest skimmer that I have ever used. I really don't get a lot inside the cup, but have been the past week or so since my SPS has been added. My neck has always been sludging up quite nicely. So, please, review my pics. Thank you.

About 3 days worth of 24/7 skimming

For the first time ever (im assuming) on ReefCentral, intoducing the CSC-250 protein skimmer. CSC (Canadian Skimmer Company) came about from heaps of users wanting the amazing build quality in the Skimz body but with a better pump, so 'Aqua Digital' went to Skimz and got them under ours and various end users guidence produced an OEM version of the SK181 SK201 and SK251. The results were impressive! Much greater performance and pretty much silent. But hey this is a Sicce pump we are talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j70KR...1&feature=plcp

from what I read about 7 to 8 inches. premium aquatics has a thread on the prototype they have in their posession.

any thoughts on a red sea brelin skimmer? found one on CL for $50...
avoid it. this is one of those worse skimmer ever skimmers often listed in the worse skimmer ever thread. if you have a sump for that tank listed in your signature... I would suggest a seaside aquatics cs5.5 reef oto nwb110 vertex in80 reef dynamics ins80.of those listd my first choice would be a tie between the vertex or reef dynamics. used see if you can find a euro reef 80 model.

thanks! the problem is I only have about 7"x7" space for the skimmer... was thinking about a AquaC Urchin Protein Skimmer with Cobalt MJ1200 Pump

Hey Guys,

Got my CS7 (CS1) last week and it has been up and running for 5 consecutive days. I've been unable to get it from not bubbling over the top/splash along the sides as seen below. The best I can do is unplug the drain tubing so water can consistently flow out and leave the bubbles atop to a minimum. When the drain line is plugged, it bubbles on top pretty good. Any thoughts on how to solve? Water level is between 10-10.5'', its a newer tank with the water being cycled for about 3.5 weeks now. I opened the air valve to max and tried the other levels with no change really.

All advice welcome! Thanks!

seaside aquatics cs 3.5 will work then( 8" to 10" water depth in sump if that is ok). It is a powerhouse in a small package.. I almost suggested it first but the 5.5 offers a little more wiggle room should you ever heavily/overstock the tank in the future. the cs3.5 will be a nice step above running an aqua c. Nothing against aqua c, but, their skimmers give lots of folks a very difficult time. The also are know to be noisy and inefficient.

drop the water level to 8"(or raise skimmer up). Be sure the wedge pipe is open all the way and let it run wide open till it settles.

that is a lot of skimmer for your tank... from the skimmate, I would say you need to bring the bubble column up into the neck more (say about 1/2 to 2/3 height) and skim a little more wet. It should still be a mostly dry/semi dry skim, just the foam will have less length to go and ultimately you will get more in the cup.

looks like an eshopps/bubble magus/ SSA cone to me.. yeah different output though(very good idea). It is a nice skimmer... Oh, the top of the bubble plate is installed incorrect... rotate it 180 deg.

yeah, 'singapore based' ... eshopps is usa based...swc canadian based... skimmers all made in china... not that this is denoting a 'bad' situation...just a reality...
mfg is interesting... when a company contact another to mfg said product, deals are struck where for a much reduced price, the mfg will make the product but also be allowed to sell the molds/design to other companies... so x produces their skimmer and y and z companies will also make their skimmers from the same mold and materials with little tweaks like output design, or color, or whatever. Honya is the big corp. in china that makes most skimmers. This is how vertex was able to copy euro reef with the in series... euro reef contacted china to mfg the 'RS' series(budget priced) and this allowed vertex to get a hold of the body and transition of the euro reef design... today reef dynamics only produces skimmers hand made in the USA... the 'cs' euro reef line(with eheim or eco plus pump options on many models) if you will.
The bubble plate is still installed incorrectly..LOL...
now if the output reduces possibility of microbubbles, and the bubble plate provides less turbulence than the others... it will be the one to buy and better choice.
