I guess nobody has tried this skimmer? I can't find any reviews anywhere on the internet. I guess I will have to try it out and write a review. $600 is a lot to drop on an unknown skimmer though.
What do you guys think of the Super Reef Octopus XP2000SSS 8” Space Saver Cone Protein Skimmer?
I'm currently waiting on my custom 90g 36x24x24 tank and I want to have a good skimmer but also don't want to take up half my sump with it. Anyone have anything negative to say about the Space Saver models? Seems to get good reviews on the websites, but not sure whether to trust those.

well , good question...it's six one half of dozen over another ! The set up of this venturi skimmer is such that it recirculates the columns water over and over constantly to allow for a more "thorough" skim within it's reaction chamber.This particular design from MTC is also more "user" friendly as the adjustments are very minimal to maintain the water/air level set by the user. Obviously dwell/contact time will be it's main focus which has some advantages in pulling out the larger moleculer proteinacious waste, therfore a more complete skimming is accomplished compared to other NONE recirculating skimmer design's. . On the other hand, the beckett's design's main focus is it's ability to "turnover" the tanks water column faster on a per hourly basis compared to any other design out there ,therefore allowing for a very HIGH oxygenation to the main tank.The skimming action on these skimmers does depend on it's size so I always prefer the taller and wider reaction chambers to allow for a decent dwell/contact time . Adjustments are more frequent, but once you get use to it ,it's like anything else , other equipment need servicing too , so no biggie !

excellent looking skimmer, has the new DC pumps, I would just make sure you have the latest pump model, some of the older generations of that pump have controller issues. the interior upsidedown cone in that skmmer looks awesome, and skimz CS is reported to be a lot better now. I'd say its a solid skimmer to try out.

I've been looking for a shorter in-sump skimmer (or one that has very high water depth) and I've got some good recommendations. Anyone have any experience with Bubble Magus Nac7, Avast Marine CS1 or Sea Side Aquatics ES7? Also, are there usually lots of new products introduced at Macna? Maybe I should wait to see whats introduced???

I've got a Bubble Magus NAC5e HOB skimmer on my 36g. I'm going to get my upgrade, 90g, running within the next month. I'm still looking around at skimmers, looking for a good deal on a slightly used one. Do you think the NAC5e would work on on the 90g for a little while until i decide or find a skimmer? It says it's rated for 80-135g and uses a Atman ph2000 pump and has a hard time skimming my tank. At first the 90g will only have a handful of corals, a clown and melanurus wrasse. Again, I'd only run the skimmer for 2-3mo. I would be running it in my sump, not on the back.

I have read that you cant over skim and I have read that a skimmer to big will not work right. Well I came a crossed a deal I could not pass up. I have always wanted but couldnt justify the price of a Bubble King Skimmer . Well I came acrossed a Bubble King Super Mariner 300 and had to have it. So I took out my old skimmer and put this in its place. It has been running now for almost 4 weeks and I get constant production from the skimmer . Now here is the kicker, my total system water volumn is only 225 gallons

What skimmer would you use for a 550 gallon display tank not including sump. Sump will at least be a 100 gallons. Corals and lots fish, heavy bioload. I am thinking of an external skimmer, but after reading all these reviews, I am more confused than ever. I would like one that a novice can run with little or no intervention. I am happy to clean the cup, but I would really like to be mostly hands off on the rest.

What are you confused about? External skimmers are great, internal are just easier to setup and are more user friendly. There's plenty of solid options on both sides of the fence.

A dual pump 12" diameter skimmer is large for your tank volume. I cant argue with results but even bubble king rates them for 350+ gallons. At the end of the day results are results though.

An external skimmer "all things being equal" are always better units than insump units - why ? You have much better control over the air/water settings to allow for "dialing" in your tanks needs and "no fuss no muss" over water heights in your sump too match the internal skimmer units needs. Also , an "counter-current recirculating" skimmer , such as a mazzei design is the "optimal' skimmer for somebody who wants (as you've said) "hands off" approach for skimming your large system ! You also have independant control over the air going into the injectors and by using an seperate "feed" pump from your sump , you can control how much water you want to skim into your skimmer.These types of skimmers are usually external set ups which is what you want also because they have a much larger reaction tube too allow for much greater dwell/contact time on top of more air and water to process the organic waste more efficiently.Stuby skimmers unfortunetaly "lack" the proper dwell/contact time as well proper "water to air ratio" for a "thorough" skimming process to be achieved !

I'm " more confused than ever" because I don't know which one to purchase. I would like some one to give me some names to choose from, and tell me these are the best options for my purpose. I know that that may be the easy way out, but I know that you all have more experience than I and I would appreciate that experience in my decision what to buy. I would prefer to pay less for equal quality, but I also know that "you get what you pay for".. Thank you.

Marine technical concepts (MTC) , their website doesn't have the "new" mazzei venturi design , but call them to get more of what's best for your particular system. I have a pic of their large skimmer under the thread "skimmer for a large system" under equiptment & filtration section.

An external dual recirc would be your best bet imho but... If you have a large sump ( 24" wide minimal) you could get a large internal dual pumped skimmer (16" diameter with 2 pumps) and you'd be good to go.

Here is what I would "personally" use on your tank (550 + sump). Don't forget that large column skimmers like this one (30" inch tall reaction tube x 8.5 diameter) have alot of air in it to keep your redox potential/ph very high which is vitally important !

Hi Bernie, do you purchase that skimmer direct from the company? Someone also suggested the Orca Pro II skimmer. What do you think of that one? I posted this question on another thread, but can you connect the outflow of the skimmer to a uv lights and then back into the return area of the sump?
