Skimmer Q&A Thread

Would a Aquamaxx coneS CO-1 work for a 75g mixed reef, mostly sps with some lps. Currently have a light bio load but would eventually like to get more fish, maybe a medium to somewhat heavy bio load. Height is limited, 22" absolute max and 21" or lower would be better. I am also considering the Aquamaxx EM200, Reef Dynamics ins100 or lifereef too. Would prefer a set it and forget it skimmer, I hate constantly adjusting equipment.

I want to purchase a Vertex Omega 180i skimmer for my 65g tank. I currently have a Seaside Aquatics CS7 skimmer. The CS7 skimmer runs fine, but I've been saving to get a Vertex and want to treat myself. Any thoughts or feedback on if this is a good buy or a good upgrade?

Unless you want to upgrade later on. The vertex omega 180i is too big for you current set up. vertex omega 130 is best fit for 65g. You will get mostly idle and heavily gunk build up on the neck of skimmer if you used omega 180i.

Thanks for the feedback. With the limited space, I have not plans to upgrade the 65g. I am only considering the Vertex because of the reviews and quality I've read about. Due to limited sump space, I can only consider a skimmer that has the pump built into the body. And the 180i fits this profile. Thanks again for the feedback.
 
Is this a good plumbing idea? Can you drain directly from your tank (on the first floor) to an external skimmer in the basement (that would then be connected to a Rubbermaid refugium)? I thought investing in a skimmer makes more sense than investing in a nice sump at this point. I'm just getting going, any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Skimmer for 240 Wide?

Hi all, I'm currently in the planning/buying phase of a new build that will be almost 240 G (72x30x25) mixed reef. I would like to take advantage of the Black Friday sales, but I am having trouble finding a good comparison of the available models for my size of tank.

I'm still determining my budget for the skimmer , but would probably like to stay below $1000.

Appreciate your thoughts.

My pump died and I'm using and old G3 to get buy until I either get a new sedra 5000 or upgrade my in sump skimmer. I ended up getting the Bubble Magus NAC 66. Very sturdy and simple design. Arrived via UPS in a very well packed box. Assembly included two pinwheel pumps instead of the usual meshwheel ones. Because of this, the injector tubes that feed the skimmer from the pumps into the inner skimmer bubble plate had to be replaced with a different size pipe.(Both of these pipes were included in packaging materials) They required the use of pliers to remove the old ones as the rubber seals are VERY snug. Installation from box to sump took less than an hour. Very impressed so far. Works very well for a 300 gallon total capacity set up. day one and two had "green tea" looking skimate. after some minor adjustment, now getting dark brown. I highly recommend this skimmer. The only drawback is that it runs two individual pumps. So two plugs need plugged in.
 
I have a 225 gallon mixed reef with maybe 60 gallons in the sump. I probably overfeed the fish, so medium to heavy bio load. I am also running bio pellets. I originally had a Reef Octopus 3000XP SSS. Pretty nice, decent results. It felt like it wasn't enough skimmer, so I upgraded the AquaMaxx Cone 5 (really based on general recommendations from Drae about the AquaMaxx skimmers). Again, it seems to be a good skimmer, but similar to my RO, I get a heavy dry foam in the cup which almost prevents any more bubbles coming into the cup. I try bringing the water level up, but it gets to the point that my cup is filled with water and then no room for foam. Anybody heard of this or have recommendations? Is the AquaMaxx Cone 5 maybe too small for my tank and load?
 
Which would you think would be more effective for a 50G DT/30G sump? The Eshopps PSK-100 or the Eshopps S-120? Both use the same pump, one has the pump inside a cone, the other has the pump on the outside of the skimmer body and is not a cone.

The difference in price is significant (over $100), hence the question.
