Skimmer Q&A Thread

It hasn't happened before, and this is the second filter sock ive cleaned and put back in. But I agree that soaking in a RODI bucket would be a good safety measure.

All the corals in my tank are healthy looking w full polyp extension too, if that rules out anything.

This happened to me right after a couple of water changes, the cause was the wrong extremely high content of Magnesium in the batch of salt I used for those two changes.
(I solved by mixing and mixing all the powdered salt in the bucket before talking any amount to prepare new saltwater, never overflowed again since then)

I use mix salt from the fish store. So hopefully tht wasn't the case. For now I just adjusted my collection cup so the skim doesn't collect as fast. This morning it was t overflowing. So hopefully it's just skimming better than I was used to previously :)

Sorry if this has been asked before. I have a JBJ 45g Rimless with a Tunze 9004 skimmer. I am having a hell of a time dialing it in. I used dry rock, ammonia, and Dr. Tims One and Only to cycle. It's been running for 7 days now and all I am getting is evaporated water inside the chamber. The foam is bright white. Water level is halfway up the intake of the skimmer, and the air valve is all the way on. Is it too low into the water? How long before I start to see some juicy skim? Any tuning suggestions?

Whats your bio load? also your system is very new, give it time. When using dry rock it takes your tank longer to fully cycle

I have not had much luck with my first question, ut I hope that this time I will be luckier:

What happens if the circulation rate of a sump is lower than that of a skimmer sitting in that sump?

I think that this is the situation I am in at the moment. My return pump is Sicce Syncra Silent 2.5, which pumps up to 1750 lph taking the head height into account. My bubble magus skimmer's pump (Atman sp2000) circulates about 2000 lph.

Hence, I seem to have created a recirculating skimmer/sump in a sense. Is this good or bad?

Thanks

I would think that you are essentially recirculating the water you are skimming. At least in part. Which would be a good thing, or so I would think. Meaning that your skimmer is being very thorough in cleaning the water.

Thank you again for the reply. The bubble mag 7 definitely looks appealing. Instead of sounding so noob and basing what I wanted on price I should have just came out and asked what good protien skimmers are out there for my size. I will definitely be looking into that one thank you.

You're welcome. And I wish you the best of luck. I kept looking into the octopus line and couldn't see spending tons of money on a skimmer that required an additional pump on top of the skimmer costs. So far, my NAC66 is still working great...and is working even better than it did 4 weeks ago.

Odd situation

Odd situation

Hi all, I'm having an issue with my skimmer and was wondering if anyone might know what's going on. I have a 55 mixed reef DT with a 120 sump, using a cad lights pls-100. Not my favorite skimmer in the world, bought it when I had a ten gallon sump n space was at a premium. Soon I'll be getting another skimmer but want to know if the problems I'm having will persist. Here's what's happening: I started his system with a fuge built into the sump. I tried to do a dual layer with egg crating "table" and a DSB underneath, with mangroves shooting through and cheato on top, giving it more flow so as to turn an lower light/flow underneath for pods etc. I also run gfo n carbon in reactors and have filter socks. This setup carried on fine for ~6 months. Unfortunately at the same time the skimmer started crapping out and overflowing daily, due to bad design I believe, and I fell ill at the same time. The fuge filled up with hair algae and red slime, and became a problem. I must note that this whole time my nitrates never got above 5 ppm. Anyways I dismantled he fuge, removed the DSB and left he mangroves, bulstered up my gfo and have been doing 10% water changes 2 times weekly to bring things back to shape. THis melted all the hair algae, making a mess of brown gunk that my system has been struggling to pull. I continued the water changes, and have scrubbed all the brown dead algae I can find, but now my skimmer is only pulling clear water and leaving gunk on the neck. I know this is a long story, but I need to know how much of this is water chemistry or skimmer related? I am changing out carbon frequently to clear out all remnants and don't see any evidence of leftover dead algae yet the skimmer still doesn't make skimmate. I appreciate anyone's patience to read this and any thoughts to add!

Man, chill out. We get it. You don't like them. Stop cross posting. What's happen to you has happened with many other brands as well.

Back to skimmers that are awesome. I just posted this in my log and thought to update here as well.

The new skimmer is doing awesome and so far very consistent with out any overflowing yet.

After about 4 days worth I'm getting just about a cup a day. Each of those lines is 1 cup and that's just over 4 cups of nice dark thick skimmate and about to clean it out. Its definitely broken in now.

I currently have the Eshopps s-120 skimmer for my 60 cube and it's running the sicce sk200 pump. Yesterday I noticed the pump was off so I took it out and cleaned it. It fired right back up after that... But this is where my issue is. Now, it will run for 5-10 minutes and shut off at random. It then stays off for 5 minutes or so and kicks back on at random. This process continues to repeat.

I took the skimmer and pump apart a second time and made sure the pump was as clean as when it was brand new.... Still doing the same thing. Nothing clogged in the air line and everything is in like new condition.

It's only 1yr old.

Wondering if anybody has had this issue in the past. Is it as simple as replacement of the impeller, or is the pump failing?

^^^^ Yes I know bad transition LOL both would be good skimmers for a smaller tank. I think a small skimmer with a small neck and good pump is key to skimming a small tank. The Eshoop smallest cone skimmer should work good as well. I think it is the 150 model but exactly sure.
