Skimmer Q&A Thread

Most skimmer ratings mean nothing and those skimmers would not handle your aquarium. In most cases you need to almost double the size skimmer unless you are running other nutrient reduction methods.

Jason has some recommendation that would fit your tank from that company.

Gotcha. These are things I'm learning, thank you for the input. I'm willing to spend the money if it's necessary, I just didn't think I was far off.

Getting setup in new sump build out. Using the stock recommended setup and pump. I will be trying out various pumps and mazzei venturi's playing around with it.

Turned it on the evening of June 2nd and letting it break in. I was figuring it would be close to 2 weeks to break in.

Took a reading of the air draw of the mag1800 and stock venturi setup on the mtx. Its getting around 14 scfh air draw.

For anyone that cares I finished off my testing with this skimmer for now.

reeftivo, you will get a better result using a pressure rated pump on that skimmer, mag and simular pumps dont always put out the same pressure and dont hold well under pressure and increase the heat out put of the pump, if you decide to stay with the mag pump get rid of the screws for different one's those eventually rust. and on another note make sure to keep venturi clean,

Actually a pump under pressure will put out less heat as the wattage used drops. And a mag 18 on a 24" lifereef would kick butt.

Thanks nyreefnoob for the info.
I'm limited at this point to a submersible though and from what I see, the true pressure rated pumps are external. I'm thinking if I don't end up going with something like a dcs7000, I would just go with one of the mags since they have always been one of the better submersibles against head pressure. I'll take your advise and look into replacing the volute screws;)

Mag are work horses but they are not efficient pumps.
I used a mag when I had my life reef skimmer and it worked pretty well.
I have use them in my pond to.
What is funny the only catastrophic fail I ever had with a pump was a mag.
I was in the living room and the lights started dimming. I walked into the tank room and in my sump sparks and black smoke were pouring out of my sump. It put this black oil type slick in the water. It took out a big chunk of my tank. I was using one as a return pump and this was like 20 years ago or something.. They still are a reliable pump though.

Shred sounds like the epoxy melted.

The mag18 was the most efficient when comparing skimmate produced to wattage used. This was against a waveline DC pump and an Aquamaxx EM300 needlewheel. I'd have been able to compare it to my other skimmers to if I had their watts used. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2519839&page=9

I've also never had issues with my mag drive screws. Have had one in saltwater since 2007. Though I know some people coat them with silicone.

The waveline apex ready version I am using now has enough head pressure rating that rates it right up there with pressure rated pumps.

Yea I am sure that is what happened.
Waveline dc pumps are not good for pressure rated situations.
I did coat my screws with silicone.
If it were me doing it all over again I would probably look at a sicce pump.

The apex ready kit (at least for the dc 12000 waveline) also swapped out the prop giving it over 22' of head height capability. The mazzei venturi didn't put a dent on it's max output. I was surprised and quite impressed.

apex ready upgrade replacing both controller and prop increasing head height to 22.96'

Hey all!

I will be purchasing the LR VS3-24 in september but had to pull the trigger on the overstock RD ins80s (w-sicce) that a company is selling for $175 out the door including shipping WTH??

Any one used the old RD skimmers with a sicce? If so, what are your thoughts?

I plan to use it on my old system which i will be setting up in my office after the 1st of the year.

I figure if it doesn't perform, for $174, I could still have a good model to tinker with.

If all else fails the CO1 is always there. Time to give it a good cleaning and well deserved rest as a back up.

They are basically the same as the old Euroreef skimmers, I used a few Euroreef skimmrs and they are fine skimmers. They are a little older design and some of the new skimmers are a little more efficient but they do the job.

That's a good deal. The classic ER/RD perform well. Many have loved them over time.

thanks guys!

I have an old vertex version of the RD ins80 and the resun ump it came with was a piece of junk. Sucker vibrated like there was no tomorrow and didn't produce enough air for the body. I had to basically close the wedge/stand pipe to get it to skim at all and run it deepr than the recommended 6.5". I had always read hit or miss (mostly hit) reviews of RD INS80 but nothing really on the INS80S with the sicce.

That 180 looks pretty good in the video.

Thanks again and Happy Reefing!

Resun do I need to say more!

I have a question on how to tune in a skimmer. I have refugium with a built in skimmer that I either have the collection cup to high and it doesn't skin anything or to low and it skins a full cup of clear liquid in one day. It's a CPR or a copy cat. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Adjust in very small tiny amounts once per day until dialed in. If its brand new raise the collection cup high and not skim much or anything for a few days and you may find it start reach up to it. Then like mentioned, very slowly in very small increments lower the cup. I would only lower it once every couple days until its at a level you want.

Might be able to help if we knew what skimmer..
It could be a bad skimmer. I recently tried a cheap skimmer on my frag system and it was just not a good skimmer, some cheap skimmers never produce. There are also getting to be pretty many skimmers out there that just are not designed well and either overflow or produce nothing.

It's the cpr aquafuge or a knock off brand. They are square with a rectangular collection cup.
