Skimmer Q&A Thread

Need some one to point me in the right direction. I am upgrading to 93 cube that will be sps/lps and heavily stocked with fish. My skimmer compartment is 12"x13" with 7" to 9" of adjustments.

Thoughts on a good skimmer between $300-400 retail?

I was thinking Nyos 120 but may be too small. I am now leaning toward the RLSS R6i from what I have been reading.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Great. Thanks. Love the Sicce pumps. Quiet! I assume the skimmer is relatively quiet then.
I would say mine is quiet but not silent. Putting a silicone mat under it really helped with the vibration noise. The air intake may be the loudest part.

Make sure you have the vertical clearance. They are tall skimmers!

Why spend that much when you can use a reefbreeders D700 skimmer that would work great for that size tank.

sorry missed this..
Nyos 120 would be small, if you want that skimmer go bigger.

RLSS R6i would be perfect but it is hard to get now and I am not recommending the new ones because I have not tried them. I am guessing they are pretty good but even those are hard to get at the moment.

ATB 840 V2 is great skimmer for that size aquarium.

I also like the Deltec skimmers nice work horses and can be bought from Battle corals just ask Adam on the sizing. I would look towards the ones with Aquabee pumps.

I would like to try the new cone skimmers myself, I hear great things about them.

Hey Guys,

Hope all is well with everyone. I've gone through this thread and I just can't find what I'm looking for. Which is why I'm forced to ask this question, I apologize in advance if it's repetitive.

I'm in need of some advise. I have a 160g display tank with a 60g sump. I currently have a G3 running right now.

I just setup this tank about 8 months ago. I've been slowing stocking it up. I currently have 6 fishes and about 24 corals (frags and colonies). I will be getting more livestock as days go by. I'm starting to think that I now need to upgrade my skimmer since it's old and since my load is getting bigger.

I have a lot of room in my sump (Height & Width). My stand is 44" tall and 46" wide and 40" deep.

Is there anything I can do to the G3? Upgrade the pump or tweak it?

or What would be a good skimmer that's on a budget of $200?

Been out for while and barely coming back into the hobby again. I appreciate any feedback.

For a $200 budget I'd keep the G3. It's a fine skimmer. A good classic that can still perform. It's about the right size for that tank too. Soak the pump in some vinegar for a few hours and could help clean it up.

Think so? Okay, I'll try out the vinegar method. Lets see what the outcome is. Thanks again!

Fyi I've seen some people replace the sedra with sicce and tunze pumps before too.

Like for the G3 I think it was this tunze

Have to search to see.

Do you think that by replacing the pump with a sicce or a tunze it will improve the performance? or should I just try to stick with OEM?

Thank you again! :D

Deltec has a cone skimmer?

No.

And that should read Cove skimmers. They are made by Aquabee and I believe Coralvue is importing them.

Still do not know how you got Deltec though..I do wonder how that may affect Deltec.

The other skimmer I want to try that looks promising is Ultra Reef Protein skimmers.

Agreed.
you are not going to find a skimmer for 160 gallon under 200.00.

Total water system is 400 gallons, heavy stock, sps dominate. Can you suggest a skimmer

ATB 1050a would work

Also might look at the Reef Octopus Regal 250INT Protein Skimmer or possible the 300.
I have been hearing allot of good thing about those skimmers and seen a few in action.

If you have a large investment in the tank and have the mnoney I might look to Bubble King or Deltec for pump reliability. Im still not 100 percent sold on DC pumps even though they have came a long way. They are out performing ac pumps for sure but reliability still scares me.
