I recently obtained a visi-jet vj100 protien skimmer.
Anyone ever use one of these?

I was thinking i could use it temporarly.
Until i can afford a better one.

All info,comments,experiences are welcome.

The Skimmer is one of the most important equipment to keep a reef. try to get the best Skimmer you can afford.

xpawn....if i were you i would see about cancelling

even a seaclone will do better then a visajet!

the sealcone is a better choice....and you know what people think of them...seaclowns....a sealcone can be placed in the sump or even hang on the back

i have seen the visajets and i wouldnt even think of ever spending $ on one

I would seriously recommend you buy yourself a Coralife Super Skimmer 125. They are a great price ($110 or so on DoctorsFosterSmith.com right now) and work GREAT. I put one on my tank about a month ago and have been amazed at how well it works.

Paul, did you give up on your DIY skimmer? Mine is still in sevice and making my evening cup of coffee daily eewwwwwww. It has stayed consistant at 3/4 to 1 cup every day.

I would agree though, don't waste good money on a visi-jet or tornado toy (seaclone). Just do good steady water changes until you can get a real skimmer. Your tank won't blow up without a skimmer on it. Some people don't even use them at all, they just keep up with thier water changes religiously.

My DIY skimmer was really designed to fit the 10G sump I was using with my old tank. When I built my new sump, it just never really worked right again. And it only really worked halfway well in the first place...

So, in sort, I gave up on our revolutionary skimmer idea. Sorry! :)

I agree with buying the best skimmer you can afford, but still, my seaclone is working 3/4 to a full cup everyday. I know it's not just me cause my mothers seaclone works just as well. I think there just so uncooperative when it comes to dialing up a foam that nobody likes em (oh, and the inferior quality)

i havent run a skimmer on my frag tank ....ever. The tank is 100g with a 55g sump. One side has about 25g of macroalgae. I have never had a problem with hair algae or any other pests. I dont really do much in the way of water changes either.

Paul, you're my hero. :)

I too recommend the Coralife Super Skimmer 125. I currently have a Remora and it could be much better.

I use a skimmer sold by catalina aquariums. It's not talked about on the threads and such, but this is what it pulled out since I cleaned it yesterday:

I was using it as a HOB, but added a sump and it works a whole lot better since putting it down there and by passing the J-tube apparatus. It's fairly inexpensive and I think the output is pretty nasty and a decent amount for a 24 hour period.
