Skimmer Question

Alright, I know you will probably hate me for asking this, but.....I was wondering what you would recommend for a good and really quiet Hang-on protein skimmer. I've looked but I really want to see and hear what you guys have to say with any first-hand experience of actually using it. Please don't suggest anything but a hang-on because therei s no possible way I could fit that in my stand! Ha.

Thanks.

You could look into the Coralilfe super skimmers, They can be used as a hang on or in sump skimmer. The price isnt bad either.

The 125 Gal unit would be perfect for your tank, It measures 5 inches long X 7.25 wide X 24.50 Tall. It sells for $139.00

D&D marine typhoon $68 drfosters, a good little unit
ps160 aquatraders larger and seems to be a good HOB
I never had a coralife SS but heard they can overflow
and the one that looks really cool, not cheap though
Bermuda Aquatics Archipelago $250 but it looks to be a real performer

I wouldn't suggest the remora pro, the Coralife is ok, typhoon and ps160 are better, but imo, the burmuda it in its own league besides the deltec which is very expensive.

For a 54 gallon tank I would recommend the remora pro w/ the mag 5 and skimmer box upgrades. It's a very decent skimmer with a small profile and it is very quiet. Ditto Kodyboy's concerns on the super skimmer - it works well but it can get out of adjustment and over flow pretty quickly if you're not monitoring it. I'm sure the Deltec hang-on is nice but they are out of my price range so I've never used one.

If you do go with the remora pro, expect one cup every two weeks........not even decent imo. This comes from aquac's site. And thats what you'll get. I use to have one on my tank and it was exactly as stated by aqua c. After using it for months, i realized it was not doing a decent job. I would have been better off doing weekly water changes. My skimmer now pulls 2-3cups of dark brown to blackish skimmate per day. The bermuda will pull a cup or two a day and is around the same price as the remora pro. But its up to you. Good luck! As hot skimmer questions always turn into fun posts. lol

Yeah skimmer posts always can be interesting.
But really guys, thanks for all of your help.
I know these n00b questions probably get extremely but I really just don't have the time to research hours on end, trying to bypass search engines and coming up with no good information.

Thanks again.

Well, let us know what you finally decide on.......ps, word of advice to newbies, you could always get a nice in tank tunze and use it in your upgraded tank or sump one day....and they are very nice and small units.

I can see where you are going with the Tunze's. But for right now, I really think i'm never going to be upgrading to something larger anytime soon. As of right now, my tank is in my room, anything larger would be profane actually haha.

I've looked at both the PS 160 and the Typhoon, extremely affordable which is a huge plus. Alright now, I have room for the PS 160, which states it needs 5 inches behind the tank.

Question: Should I go with the PS-160 since I have the room, and will be able to go with any upgrade tank in the future I may get?
Or is the Typhoon a better performer?

Thanks.

Its up to you man. The typhoon has to be emptied into a container, there is no collection cup and the ps160 uses a cup. IMO, they are both pretty good skimmers especially for teh price.
