Skimmer recommendation...

I'm looking at purchasing the Super Reef Octopus XP1000 Space Saver SRO XP1000SSS skimmer from BRS. Before I do though, I wanted to check with you guys to be sure this would be a wise purchase or if you have other recommendations. This would be for a 75 gallon reef tank. Thanks much!!!

Personally I rate the octopus skimmers very highly, always buy a skimmer rated at twice the size of your tank volume, if the XP1000 is twice the size I would say go for it

That's a very good point, so I'll have to look at getting the 2000 model as I'm going for the space saving. Thanks for the input!!!

Just curious why this is? For some reason, I was under the impression that this wasn't necessarily needed for the better brand skimmers.

FWIW: I had the SRO xp1000sss, and I hated it, for 1 reason, and thats the pump is underneath the skimmer. However, I really like the SRO skimmer line though, just not the SSS version. I own a SRO 2000 and its a very good skimmer.

I own the SWC 160 cone skimmer for my 75g tank and it is awesome. I did a ton of research and you really can't go wrong with a reef octopus or the swc. Make sure your sump can handle the footprint. You should be fine with the XP1000 since it is small. I only had 10" to play with.

My concern is the footprint which is why I was looking at the SSS series. I gather having the pump under the skimmer is a pain to maintenance. Thanks for the idea on the 160 as that is also a good choice.

I'll also throw out there that the swc 160 is silent. I am not sure of the noise level on the reef octopus.

Just what I have learned over the years, all skimmers IMO are overrated size wise, and one larger thaN the aquarium will certainely help to remove proteins and organic wastes plus aid oxygen saturation, I think even octopus skimmers are overrated size wise even though they are quality IMO.

SWC cant compare to the SRO line. The bubble blaster pump is hands down better then the pump on the SWC. Ive owned both and would rather have a SRO then the SWC skimmer line

Go check out the Reef Dynamics INS-150 or 180. I use the 180 on my 150G and it's VERY quiet and pulls a ton of skimmate. Also like the fact that I don't have to undo many little thumb screws everytime I need to clean it.

IMO it's a very good alternative...

The bubble blaster is a better pump then the atman on the swc if you have the room for it in your sump.

I could not have agreed more...unless you would have said, "The bubble blaster is a FAR better pump then the atman..."

I have owned several skimmers and the ones I have like the best are the euro-reef and now reef dynamics. With this brand there I no need to upsize anything. They are also some of the most energy efficient models.
