Skimmer recommendations

ETSS or Reef Octopus or others? Need to accomodate about 300 gals total volume.

Sounds like ETSS requires an external pump. IWAKI's are a little pricey, really don't want to by another external pump.

thanks,

I am partial to the euro reef simmers they are work horses. I had the same 4 working continuously for the past eight years and never had a an issue with any of them.

A mesh modded Octopus is hard to beat. I have one on my 120 and it kicks up a good bit of sludge every two days. The mesh mod did not interfere with the start up as I have seen some others report. Also if you go this route I have extra mesh you can use.

I also run the octo extreme xp2000 cone with the honya(bubble blaster) pump. You would have to go to the xp5000 for your volume. I like my simmmer. Yanks tons of sludge. Way more than the euroreef and the pump is slightly quieter. They are finiky with the depth of water being constant but not nearly as finiky as the ETSS. I also ran a EV-180. The pump on the EV (mag9) added enough heat to make my chiller turn on on cooler days.

I still have the EV-180 as a backup but from what I have heard about octo they will be very good about honoring the 3 year pump warranty.

What is a mesh molded Octopus?

It is simple to do. Just pull out the impeller and tie some mesh on it. It increases the amount of air intake. Some of them I think are available with a mesh wheel already installed rather than the pinwheel impeller. Doing this probably depends on how large of skimmer you get and what type of pump it comes with.

Also, mesh modding your impeller will void your 3 year warranty. I have done it on a sedra but it always made a vibration in the pump. The pinwheel was always more quiet, that being said, the meshwheel increased skimmate production significantly. Just wasn't worth the noise and the voided warranty for me.

Thanks, but I'm looking for one with a larger capacity.

NeoFish,

I have a PM XL2 skimmer for 700 gallons, it's a bit bigger then you are looking for and to big for my tank so I need to down size let me know if you are interested.

I'm working on the same decision the Sro XP5000 or the Sro 5000int. I found the 5000int to be a bit cheaper but there rated the same. I know cones are the in thing right now so does that mean the xp5000 is a newer model which one did you pick.
