skimmer return foam filter

I have a EuroReef RS6-2+ skimmer on my reef tank. In a quest to reduce nitrates to 0, I have been looking at my skimmer return/level control tube. It has a foam bubble filter that looks like it could be a nitrate factory. Are any of you removing this for that reason?

I would recommend cleaning it every once in a while, then put it back on.

I have on on my on my g3 skimmer and I clean mine whenever I dump my skimmate and thats about every 8 days I test my water every week and I dont have any nitrates.

I sure that it doesn't hurt it at all. I have just never thought to clean mine...out of sight, out of mind. Looking at it that way the other day, I realized that it may be a nitrate factory since in my case the water is flowing out of the level tube over the foam and in the sump. Just right for that condition.
