I'm using a 55g tank for a sump and before I glue in the glass plates I wanted to find out " why are some protein skimmers elevated in a sump. My plates are cut for 10 inches of water depth. Almost finished with the new stand, I can put up some pics if anyone wants to see.
because different skimmers operate best in different depths of water. I use a ER and ER suggests 6-8 inches of water-so you use a skimmer stand. I don't know of any skimmers that work well in 10 inches but I certainly don't know the specs of a lot of skimmers out there.
The skimmers a asm mini-g , it had a chip so it was marked way down , It's running in a temp. sump next to the tank, water depth is about 8 inches. I played with the stand pipe till it started working right, the instructions that came with it are useless. Ive googled everyway I can for setup tips , I found nothing useable , it's my first non hob skimmer and my last tank setup was 10 yrs ago, thanks for the help. http://www.mknwaves.com/browseproducts/ASM-MINI-G-Skimmer.html
well, the ASMs are very similar to the ERs so I would guess 6-8 inches. If you can't contact ASM you might ask the guys at Premium Aquatics as they carry ASMs and are always helpful. I'm sure some on the main equipment board would know as well. It's pretty important for consistent performance.
Sounds like I'm makin a table. Thanks for the advise guys. I'm sanding and painting the new stand today, hardest part was makin the doors. I priced out elec plug strips and wow thos eare pricey. I have enough stuff in the garage to make my own with a gfci starting at the wall.
