Picked up some Unions at Savko today. They look wimpy, but it's what I need! I guess I was used to looking at those Sch80 unions at bLowes.

Thanks for pics, jlf. Question though...why is yuor effluent tube pointed up rather than down?

Thx
Jason

Jason,

It is pointing down. The photo was taken from the bottom of the skimmer. The one thing I love about the rubber end cap is that you can easily access the inside of the skimmer.

I was wondering about the rubber end cap. Is there a source or part number for these?

Oh....Doh! I bought a hard cap. I think that's good thinkin', by golly! I'll ditch the hard cap and go w/ the rubber. It's not drinking water safe though... it hold up well in the harsh marine environment?

Picked up my collection cup this evening. I found something even a little better, although it is made from polycarbonate. :( That's ok, we'll see how it works out. I'll probably glue the union before I cut the hole to provide some reinforcement.

Started the build! Built the collection cup. :) The girlfriend says, 'Oh! You're skimmer will work ... wait ... that's just the top? ... it's gonna be big!' :)

Most local plumbing supply stores should carry the 6" rubber end caps. Savko does carry the flat end caps and theirs appear to be low profile, all but the 6" caps; they are very tall.

Many lumber companies carry 6" PVC caps, but theirs are a little rounded on the bottom. Most hardware stores carry 4" flat caps. They can be cut down to size using a miter saw. If you don't cut them down they can be hard to remove in the future.

That's why I like the rubber caps.

I'm gonna put a rubber on for protection. :D Won't be set in stone if something goes wrong....

Other idea is a cleanout fitting w/ the lid turned inside out. Slightly wider base that way though.

Did some more assembling tonight. I decided to port and polish my cone/dome/top so I can make sure I don't have any bubble popping going on. After I get the riser in the top cut and assembled, I will polish the end to make it a nice smooth transition through the union. I used a dremel to remove material.

I also cut my 6" PVC with the tablesaw. I should have built a jig first. After my attempt at cutting, I was 2.5" shorter than I would like. Height of body, not including the cone is 37.5." It's really tough to cut that straight on the saw! All said and done, I'm like 1/32" off. Did some touch up w/ the dremmel. I'll place this crooked side on the bottom and it'll be ok.

Picked up my 6" "rubber" from Savko tonight too. Made it in at 4:55PM. Heh.

How tall do I want the riser tube in the collection cup to be? I'm 3.6" through the neck alone, so maybe another inch or three?

Thx!
Jason

Ordered a Gen-X 4100 pump yesterday. Showed up today! Only they sent a 2400 by mistake! Grrr! I already glued up fittings too.... back to Savko too! Doh!

Ha ... naw, no more motor tinkerin' for me. I used to be a member of one of OSU's race teams though.

But, hey c'mon, I'm proud of my skimmer-to-be. It's gotta perform well!
