Skimmer (upgrade) question

yeah, I figured, my setup doesn't allow for me to drill for an external pump....I think PM recommends a Sedra 12000, isn't that a submersible? I figured a Mag24 would be better....

hmmm, I pulled down the PDF and it said the sedra 12000 and 9000....

Seems wierd that they recommend a Mag 12, but seems to be underpowered for it, is the 24 too much??

MSX all the way.

BTW, if someones getting as much dark skimmate as Badazztealcobra's pic in 1 day????? SOMETHING is WRONG.

A bit of overfeeding? Bad rock/substrate? Dead fish?

What gives Ostrow? How big is your tank?

Really just trying to understand that amount of gunk, daily???

Anyway, MSX is great quality, and if you go Askoll??? Hard to beat.

Everything you need to know is in my signature. I have a 3gal waste collector. It is 3/4 full to completely full every 7 days. I feed once a day. I don't think anyone who has seen my tank has found the rock, substrate or anything else to be bad or dead (though a recent STN, very slow at that, is disturbing).

If you have to run an in-sump skimmer, then an Askoll or Sicce powered skimmer with a meshwheel is fine. But it simply will never come close to what a downdraft/beckett can do. It does not mean the others are bad. But gig currently possesses a better skimmer than he would be switching to. Needs to power it properly, which means, not a Mag pump!

Gig, I have no idea about that pdf. It doesn't show anything for the 1. For the ohter models, they show the Sedra, etc, but that skimmer will only work right with a pressure-rated pump.

Gotcha, youre saying that you feel even though it uses more wattage youre getting better skimmate in your application.... Got it. :D

I got confused for a minute.

Heres my average haul every 8 or 9 days with my MSX250...

I get that daily. And never have to tweak a thing.

I do skim fairly dry in all honesty, I could probably get more out of it, but I see no reason to. That stuff is disgusting as can be, and I also have never tweaked anything since the initial redo of mesh and dialing in. I honestly havent tweaked or even turned it off in about 3 months. I probably should to clean it all up now that I think about it.

I dont even turn it off to empty the cup, just pop it off and dump and clean it, then toss it back on. :D

Aint it tasty ?!?!?

synofreak- Thats what I am ordering for my 180 a MSX 300A. It will have the single askoll pump mod. MSX told me that it can handle a 450gtank fully stocked with fish and SPS with no problems. So will work wonders on my 180g. Cant frikin wait.

I think you wouldve been more than fine with the 250A myself. :D

so ostrow, no pressure pumps exist for submersibles? what about those High head pumps like Quiet Ones? are those pressuee?

Oh, I realize those are the desired pumps, but just looking for other options...If I could do an inline, I would.

I have a 180G (around 240-ish total volume)...I have 3 med tangs and dottyback

Hey, how about a Bubble King Deluxe 5000,

C'mon guys, this thread is almost funny. Three medium tangs and a dottyback? You could probably run this system without a skimmer with a decent macro filled refugium and regular water changes. :p

I agree with skimmer overkill but at some point......???

There are numerous skimmer out there that will do a great job, some better than others. Watt usuage should always be considered for long term cost management.

Keep on eye on the selling forums and eBay. Don't get committed to any one skimmer. You'll end up with a WAY oversized skimmer at a great price.

thanks Edward, I had a bubble king 5K , but decided to sell it to buy a new car ;)

I likely wont add another large fish and will stock more corals but I'm not happy with the look and growth of my corals in the tank and I've often wondered if my skimmer is not doing a GOOD enough job.

Unfortunately without some re-engineering of my sump and some other items, I think moving to a pump that is fed by the return is better than a beckett-type skimmer that needs an inline pressure pump. My skimmer produces skimmate, but not at the rate I think it should, even in a lightly stocked tank.

I definitely am keeping my eye out for the used forums ;)
