skimmer upgrade question

Hi all,

I know I'm going to get lots of opinion on something like this...

I'm currently running a vertex 130 on my 75 gal. It works fine, but the air intake noise is the loudest thing in my tank. All the equipment in the tank was setup with silence in mind. Been doing some research and all reviews are over performance. Anybody has any experience, Im looking for an equal or slightly bigger skimmer that's a little more silent.

What are my options?
Want to keep the skimmer foot print at 8.5x11 or smaller.

I'd your looking for quiet... Get a DC skimmer. I have a Your Choice Aquatics DC16 and its super quiet and works well. Small footprint 8x8 and I have it on a 50G cube tank.

On most skimmers the noise comes from the air intake. You just need to put a little silencer on it. You can make one real easily with a old film canister or pill bottle. Just drill a hole in one end for the skimmer air hose to fit inside then drill a second one on the other end to let air in. Some people but a cotton ball inside but it really is not needed.

the vertex skimmer comes with an air silencer already, but maybe i'll try and make something and see if it makes a difference.

Is there any water in it. I've had sump level rise and forgot to turn skimmer off and water gets in the canister. Even a small amount creates a lot of noise.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have to take the current silencer apart and check it out, and I'll give the diy silencer a try and see if it makes a difference.

I've the same skimmer and I don't hear any noise from my silencer. Maybe yours is missing a foam inside perhaps?? open it and see if it's in there.
