got a 240 gal tank, getting a 90 gal sump tank custom built in a few weeks. My old MR-3 skimmer is not good enough to keep up with a system this size. So i need some suggestions on what skimmer you would use in a system this large? I want something good, but i don't want to go broke in the process. Help!

WOW! Cloud IX?!?! what rock you been under buddy? Good to see you around here.

seems lately the Super Reef Octopus skimmers are what alot are looking at. we are planning to have one as a prize at the swap this year. However, at $560 they are quite pricey.

did you run your MR-3 with the same pump as yoru return or did you use a seperate pump? reason I ask is the new thing seems to be the Needlewheel pumps like the bubbleblaster used on the afore mentioned skimmer. if you use a seperate pump to feed teh skimmer they are said to me more ecomonical as they use less power to run them.

Yea i have been out of the hobby for awhile. I was living in Fla, then when i returned i did not like my sump set-up. So i have not started my tank back up since i knew i was going to redo the sump. Figured that i would get all then correct equipment before i get it going again. I plan on using the same return pump to power the skimmer.

I tried to make my own sump tank and that ended in a disaster. I made the tank but used a bit to thin acrylic and it shattered during testing. that's what i get for trying to be cheep, so this time Im having glasscages build it to my specs. So before i submit my final plan's for the sump i need to have a skimmer in mind to make sure its going to fit my new sump.

I hear ya. I have an Mr2 for my 180 with 150 sump and it seems to be working very nicely. I wouldnt mind a MR3 for it, but dont want to shell out the upgrade cash. I also run mine off the main display return pump which is also a barracuda. alot of the new skimmers these days utilize the needlewheel pumps, but I think there are some out there that are recirculating models that use the feed off your main return and have a separate needlewheel that whips the foam up even further. not 100% sure though.

Best of luck with teh custom sump. hope the follow your directions properly. they missed a few measurements on mine, but did work to correct it.

Don't know if you have seen it or if it is approiate for your needs or if this is approiate to do. I have a skimmer for sale. Its a Precision Marine CV626, venturi, counter current design. They say its rated for 150-200gal tank. Possibly a little small for you, your call there. It has a 6" dia main chamber, sits approx 25" high, total including the collection cup. It also has the add on waste collection/cutoff chamber that is seperate from the main collection cup. This saved my butt a time or two before I had it dialed in perfectly. This is an $80 add on. It is in great shape. Asking $200 for all. Feel free to PM me if you are interested. If this is not approiate, please feel free to tell me to buzz off. Mark

I got a demerit from a Mod for doing this same thing, Not supposed to post for sale items in other threads i guess. FYI

I would take you up on it if it was big enough. 200 is a great price. But since im gonna have a total water vol of 350 gal, i'm afraid it would be a bit small for my needs.

If your not supposed to post for sale in here. where do you post it? cause i got a few things i'm gonna want to sell here soon.

you can post for sale in the forums provided you start the thread on it and offer a price with the listing. you can also sell things in the for sale forums located on teh main part of Reef Central.

at least that is what I have understood on it.
