Skimmer???

In my opinion, yes. But some more than others. The level of necessity depends on your goals and what kind of tank you have.

I have a 75 gallon reef tank with over flow. I have an ES 100 sump with a siccra 3.5 pump. I have 40 pounds of live sand, 65 pounds of live rock, I have an aquaticLife lights that have (4) T5 bulbs and (8) moon light LED's. I currently have (2) clowns and (1) regal tang (hoping she lives through the acclimation period and the possibility of her coming down with ich). I would like to add more fish and eventually start adding corals.

If you want to get into corals, definitely get a skimmer.

Definitely keep an eye on that tang... most people on this site recommend a tank at least 3 times the size of yours for a regal tang.

Is the tank drilled? Do you have someway to skim the surface? Your best bet is to purchase a skimmer, they come in all different price ranges but something is better than nothing imo.

i would recommend a skimmer. You can one that hangs on the back of the tank if you dont have room below or in your sump.

Thank you! I do have the room in my sump to add a protein skimmer. I have just read that it isn't necessary to have one until you have had the tank for almost a year and you have several fish and or corals. I plan on starting to shop them this week and possibly add it by the weekend.

Its a tough question i am also looking for a skimmer for my 75g. My budget isn huge but i want to get a nice one as well for my money. From the research i have done i am leaning toward Reef Octopus XS160. lots of people also have aquac and seem to like them. Its all preference really and budget. I compare the water to the air i breath. I like clean air and my fish deserve clean water so getting a nice skimmer is worth it.

anyone know anything about the sea clone 150 or the coralife skimmers??

Yep - for comparison, you could get one of those skimmers, or you could get yourself a 2 Liter bottle of coke, dump it out, throw a $100 bill in there, and toss it in the trash can.

Pass on those models, you'll save yourself the headache and inherent carpet replacement when they overflow for no reason.

Better bargain skimmers can be had, Octopus, SWC, Avast (DIY Kit), and ASM come to mind.

the eshopps skimmers are pretty good for the money. I really like mine so far. I'm still fine tuning it since it just started running yesterday, but it'll get there

I wrestled with the idea of not running a skimmer on my 600g FOWLR. I thought if I lightly stocked the tank and did alot of waterchanges I would be ok. I have a unique situation because I dont have a sump (originally set-up as FW with canister filters). After many months of reading I came to the conclusion that I needed a skimmer. Im going with an octopus skimmer and working with Mike at Reef Specialty. He really knows his stuff and can help you decide which skimmer to run on your system.

Well, I told you about a Coralife --- you can buy a $500.00 skimmer and it won't do anything more or last any longer than the Coralife. And, the Coralife is easy to adjust too !
