If the goal is to set up a low-maintenance system w/o a skimmer (which is my goal too), then hook up a Turf Algae Filer. Turf is supposed to be much much more powerful of a nutrient removal macro than any other (and it leaves food/pods in the water while it takes out nitrate and phosphate), but you can't really buy one ready-made. So I made one in 5 gal bucket using mostly parts laying around, and now it's my only filter of any kind (no skimmer, no waterchanges, no phosban, no filtersock, etc), and my phosphates and nitrates hit zero in one week.
