Skimmers

God I hate to even ask this question because i'm sure its been asked 100 times.. but I'm going to upgrade my skimmer (home made one currently) and would like some thoughts as to which brand. Now I did like the looks of the ASM, but because of the price I havn't gotten it. I would say I could work a price range in the area of $100 to $150. If there is nothing good in that price range then I would wait. I was reading people talking about ESU Super Skimmer. I already had a dud with a prizim and don't want to waste the money again.

If you could jump into the low $200 range the Aqua C remora is highly talked about. The cost will vary by the pump you choose to run with it. It is ready to go right out of the box with no mods needed.

Kent Nautilus TE is an ok middle of the road Venturi in my opinion. Only has a few drawbacks in my book. One being that it is a stock Venturi and the other is the adjusting is done by lifting the riser tube and not a gate valve. But it does throw a lot of foam up in the cup. I have one here I am willing to let go fairly cheap if you are interested. The only reason I am not using it is because it won't fit into my sump under the stand, it is too tall for my setup. LMK

thanks,

Rick

Would like to stay with an in-sump model. looks like the remora's are hang on.

Aqua C does make the Urchin and Urhin Pro skimmers. Very similar to the Remora, but in-sump as opposed to hang-on.

I'm a big fan of Aquamedic Turboflotors (HOB, not the 1000). I can connect you to a website that probably still sells them for under $200. I don't see why it couldn't be run in-sump. I'll be switching one of mine to run in-sump soon. My oldest one has been running 24/7 for over 4 years now. I've read some good things about Reef Octopus skimmers too. Seem to be Chinese-made ASM knock-offs, and much cheaper too. When I had need for a small skimmer a while back, I got burnt with a Prizm too, so I know just how you feel.

Critter, What size tank is this for?

Since I do not know the tank size, I can't zero in too well.
My first choice is to use ASM. They are awsome. Lots of foam, great skimmer, easy to use, produce a high end result for a middle price range. I use two of them in my shop. They do a better job thank several of the skimmers that sell for twice the price.

If you want something more reasonable, the corallife skimmers have been very well rated (surprisingly). They are a great bang for he buck too!

Both of the above brands are sold with pumps included.

Email me if you want more specific information.

Thanks, but i've decided on the Octopus 150. $125 ish. Got 50 already for it, so should have it in a month. I'm going to use the pitch on my wife, that it will save money because I won't have to buy the nitrate sponges etc. ;)

took a look at the octopus skimmer, it appears well made. I too remember the days of the prizm skimmer and the mystery of the wet floor!

I didn't get mine yet, probably in a week or two. but thats the one I plan on getting. It may not be the last skimmer I ever buy, but that should get me a number of years down the road.

I have a euro-Reef and a ASM both work very well.
I looked up that Skimmer Octopus 150 I see it is made like both of them more to the Euro-reef style that will be working very well for that price.

Is this the one you got if I saw right?

The thing I hated most was all the micro bubbles back into the tank. I never bothered getting the upgrade. You can't shine ****. ;)

You can get a Euro Reef CS80 shipped from premium aquatics for $198. I have this skimmer and it produces consistent skimmate and the build quality is way better than my ASM's.

Which upgrade are you talking about?
If its the gatevalve mod I got that on both skimmers works very well plus I added a 100 micron filter bags that I put on the exit down tubes I was still getting micro bubbles in the tank till I added it.

I was talking about the upgrade they had for the prizim skimmer that changed the intake tube and some other things.. i just didn't bother figured it wasn't worth it.

The Skimmer Octopus 150 looks as the euro reef and ASM that you can put a gate valve on too.

First, I didn't realize the 150 NW didn't have a drain in the cup.. so I'm going to have to modify it to my likings.. but this was my misstake.. but the pump won't restart itself. If you lose power, the pump can't get the NW going and thus just fills the body up to about the inlet T and thats it. You have to blow into the air line to the venturi to get it to fire up. I'm currently in conversations with the retailer about this. My guess in the end they will have to replace the pump. Other then that its still breaking in. Been running since Friday. well made for sure. As far as the pump it seems its hit or miss as to if this happens.

How's it working? I'm thinking of getting one..

Just an update, after about 4 days the skimmer has finnaly broken in. Also I raised the water in my sump from about 4 inches to 6.5 inches. The funny thing is, the pump has started restarting itself after a power failure. Not sure if its from breaking in or if its because I raised the water level. Either way its working great.. heres some pics of about 2.5 days of skimmate.
