Skimmers

No one has a 9015 yet so this would be an impossible comparison, European customers will just be getting them this week and we should have them next week.

Skimmers just vary too much to really make these comparisons feasible, depending on design skimmers pull out different organic compounds at different rates, one might be incredibly efficient for albumin and another trumps it at cellulose removal. Just too many variables to have any real meaningful comparisons.

I was at a store last week(the owner also has an online store)He told me that the tunze skimmers suck.He had used them before and didn't find them to be any good.I found that odd because I see that you make very good products.I took a look at 2 euroreef skimmers that he had and they didn't look all that great to me.Nice pump but as far as a solid skimmer, It didn't look like it was an expensive skimmer.I have seen some knockoffs that lokk to be better constructed.I would like to know how are your skimmers compared to other companies.I know tunze has been around for a while and the company has had time to make good products that work.Thats why when I speak to some people I am surprised they don't like your skimmers.I have yet to see anyone come out with a better wavemaker or pumps.I have the osmolator and I like that very much.I was going to buy a tunze skimmer I wanted it from day one but I spoke to people and they told me it wasn't a great skimmer(store owners and workers)Maybe I should not have listened to people but when it comes to money I didn't want to buy something and then find out its not good and I am stuck with it.

First, we basically invented the skimmer, Sanders and Tunze were the first with commercial units back in the early 60#s. We also invented the venturi skimmer. What the people you asked to give that answer is these skimmers were from another generation, they wer plankton safe and skimmed for the older corals reef style where soft corals were the focus. For SPS the closed loop design was not adequate for the toxin load and mucus production in loaded large tanks. Also, I think the percepion is in relation to the price and under the older distributor I remember paying 400 dollars for a 3115 skimmer so it was a lot of money for a very weak skimmer, that should have been $200. The new DOC skimmers are a new generation that really work well, their is no way a small skimmer like this will beat a 12" diameter 24" tall unit. But in a competition of all the $300, I would expect the 9010 to at least place second if not first and this is also difficult because we would be quietest, most consistent in performance by a huge margin.

I always thought tunze was the best and has been around the longest.Other companies just followed your lead.I found it was harder to get German products at a cheaper price.Everything is made in china and there is alot of trash out there. Is tunze outsourcing any of there products to china.I know Hagen is buying alot of stuff and sending products to be manufactured in china because of heavy competition.

No. We talk about it and basically everyone feels the same at the company, we couldn't live with our consciences as we know China presents a big danger to all of our jobs and our way of life. Not to mention they have no regard for intellectual property and eventually every one has a copy of your product. We still make most things in house, a few small items like gloves, brushes, glue are made by other German companies. We use a couple pumps from Italian manufacturers and the only thing that comes from China are the actual magnets inside the pumps and magnet cleaners but this is unavoidable as the only other source for magnets is Siberia, the manufacturing process is a health hazard, you have to work with a lot of heavy metals so it would be virtually impossible to do in a first world country. Besides that our products are niche products and the volume isn't their for the large mass production scales of China. I think price pressure only exists if you are an also company, you just also have a powerhead like everyone else. Mercedes, Cadillac, Rolls Royce have always had a market, because they are the best of what is out their, at the bottom tier like Kia, Suzuki and Chevrolet the industry is very cut throat and competitive, then you are just talking bare necessities and that is another market completely.

Thats what I like about your company. Why should I pay good money for something that is made in china. Not everything is that cheap.I would imagine even china's costs will have to rise.I look at coral life skimmers. Its a nice skimmer yet it isn't that cheap but its made in china or somewhere else in asia for dirt cheap yet sold here at a not so cheap price.I see that most companys are looking at the bottom line. How can I make something for nothing and make a ton of money. Its to bad.

6) 9020 can run 528 gallons. Keep in mind the rating is for fish only or soft coral tanks, for SPS cut the ratring by 40%, for heavy loads of fish and SPS 60%. The DOC skimmer classic should not be used on heavily loaded tanks and for serious SPS systems are considered an expert only skimmer.

Roger,

My tank is a medium to heavy stocked 190 gallon barebottom system (150 gal display + 40 gallons in sump). I have 4 medium sized fish (3-5"), 13 small fish, 9 shrimp, 10 Mexican Turbo snails and an urchin. I plan to stock this tank with all SPS and maybe one or two softies. Would the 9020 really be enough skimmer for my setup? 528 gal - 60% = 211 gallons.

I'm currently running a Turboflotor Baby (48" tall) that is running strong, but it does require being installed in a remote location due to its size. My wife and I are actually considering moving our tank to another location in the house before we stock it with corals. The other locations inside the house would require everything to be installed under the cabinet or in-sump.

I've narrowed a replacement skimmer down to either a Deltec AP851, or the Tunze 9020. I'm definitely a big fan of Tunze products, but I'm just not sure if this skimmer would be able to do the job.

Please let mee know your honest opinion if this would be enough skimmer.

Floridiot,

I just received my 9020. . .I'll be running it on a 110 gallon mixed reef (LPS, SPS, anemones, 11 fish). I'll let you know how it performs.

And by the way, while I live in St. Louis now I'm really a Floridian!

:D
