skimming black goo?

I have no idea what this might mean, my skimmer has been skimming out pitch black stuff for the past couple days. There has to be a couple inches of the stuff in my collection cup...

All of my corals and fish seem to be unaffected by it, and it is not visible in the display tank.

Wow...what type of skimmer is that?...I guess you could say it is working well and at least it is pulling whatever that crude is out of your system :)

some swc skimmer, nothing special. I think the goo might be related to our carbon, we just started putting in in this flow through bag, ive never seen it do this before though

I haven't used carbon in a bag like that before but have heard you're supposed to rinse it out first?...did you rinse the carbon a bit before you put it in? what "brand" of carbon is it?

I did that once when I put a bag of charcoal under my return. 1500 gal/hour was grinding it up and the skimmer was removing the dust.

It is under my return, I have never rinsed out my charcoal before either. I used to have it wrapped in this cotton stuff but we ran out so we began using the bag. jim.l seems right. I will have to find another place where there is not so much water grinding it up
